About this listen

As the Horus Heresy divides the Imperium, Corax and his few remaining Raven Guard escape the massacre at Isstvan V. Tending to their wounds, the bloodied Space Marines endeavour to replenish their numbers and return to the fray, taking the fight to the traitor Warmaster.

Distraught at the crippling blow dealt to his Legion, Corax returns to Terra to seek the aid of his father - the Emperor of Mankind. Granted access to ancient secrets, Corax begins to rebuild the Raven Guard, planning his revenge against his treacherous brother primarchs. But not all his remaining warriors are who they appear to be.

The mysterious Alpha Legion have infiltrated the survivors and plan to destroy the Raven Guard before they can rebuild and threaten Horus's plans.

This has always been a favourite HH novel of mine. A nice change of pace from pitched battles between the Legions, this is almost a spy thriller with the Alpha Legion’s infiltration of the Raven Guard and Kiavahr plus learning bits about the Primarch Project on Terra. I still never quite remember which of the Raven Guard characters are ‘Alpharius’ so it always leave me guessing. I felt some of the voices didn’t quite land for me but that may just be because I have not listened to this narrator much before. Overall a great story.

A great Horus Heresy novel for fans of the Alpha Legion and Raven Guard

Have listened to several books now in the HH series and only started this one because I was curious what would happen to the Raven Guard after the Istvaan massacre.

I'm not a fan of Corax and the Raven Guard as a chapter (and I still ain't), but the book positively surprised me.

I really liked the story and the introduction of the Alpha Legion into it. I skipped "Legion" in the HH series but I might go back to it after this book.

The last few hours were full of suspense as the climax grew. I'm not that deep into 30k lore yet so I genuinely didn't know what would happen.

As neither a fan of the Alpha Legion nor the Raven Guard I genuinely enjoyed the story. Learning a bit more about the primarchs and their geneseed and getting a glimpse of Terra.

The narration wasn't bad, but it wasnt distracting. I've heard better voice actors and the voices Gareth uses are sometimes very confusing and weren't really pulling me into the characters. The setting, mood and atmosphere created by the writer did. With "Fulgrim" I had a lot of problems finishing the book due to the performance of the narrator even though the story was good, I might have dragged that book over a few weeks to finish it. Here it was just a slight inconvenience and I finished listening it in three sessions.

Better than expected

Seemed to get through this one very quickly I couldnt stop listening. Corax is fantastic and certian moments between the raven guard and imperial fists characters are well played. will listen again

fantastic loved every moment!

I really liked the story, but I didn't like the narrators voices. Imperial space marines sounding like medieval peasants just doesn't do it for me.
Not enough gravity or depth to the voice acting.
Erebus sounds like a little goblin.

Having said that, I am glad I bought it, for such a great story and to fill in a gap in the heresy.

This is an amazing story!

Classic 40k: lots of action, deceit and big characters. Nice to get back to legion vs legion battles.

One of the best in the series so far
