About this listen

'I turned towards the door. It was closed, but I sensed there was something - someone - standing on the other side, staring straight at me. A prickling sensation ran through me . . . I was absolutely terrified, rooted to the spot and unable to breathe . . .'

His name is Jason Bray. He's your quintessential vicar: that guy in the long dress and poncho who stands at the front of the church and tells you God loves you. He's the person who will baptise your children, take your wedding, and conduct your Auntie Beryl's funeral.

But then he's also the person you will call in when Auntie Beryl still keeps appearing on the landing in her nightie, or when things go bump and rattle and your shoes start moving on their own, or when you think your mother-in-law might be possessed.

Jason is a deliverance minister, and this is a story of oppression and possession, of ghosts, poltergeists and other paranormal phenomena, and how to deal with them. He is the first Anglican deliverance minister to write a book about this ministry for the general reader. A warm, sympathetic and humorous character who sees it as his mission to serve the community and help families in distress, each true-life adventure is like a detective story. At times, it's a case of mental illness. At others, an energy or memory that has latched itself onto a place or property. Sometimes, he's even encountered fraud!

Welcome to his world.

As a deliverance minister, I do not agree with some of Fr. Jason's theories or practices. Neither has he experienced all of the supernatural and he is very dismissive of certain things attributing it to poltergeist activity caused by the living ONLY! He seems to be a "house blesser" if there were ever to be such a thing.

This is however a good listen. A good listen for the knowledge of what priests do and how much of a variety of things people approach us with. Clearly the church had had a hand in "toning down" this book. At least it seems that way as our team has very different practices and theories regarding the demonic, curses and the occult that all cause paranormal and supernatural activity.

Not what all Deliverance Ministers do!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and felt that the author (who’s also the narrator) struck a perfect balance between story, pace and tone.

You don’t need to be religious to enjoy this (fwiw I’m an atheist) and I’d recommend it to anyone with an interest in religion, the occult, who wants a differing, honest viewpoint.

I stumbled across this and was glad I did. Great book

Throughly entertained. Jason Bray places the generally unexplained ‘happenings’ into categories that make sense. You don’t have to be religious to appreciate his work. I just wish I could meet this fascinating guy over a ‘well made’ cup coffee or a glass of wine.

Captivating, hooked from start to finish.

A different narrator would have worked better. When the reader did a female voice usually with a hysterical tone, it set my teeth on edge😁
The content was often tedious and very mundane and I was left thinking how naive the vicar was.

As a practicing Catholic I was fascinated by the similarities and differences between my branch of the Church and the authors. It seems we have a lot more in common than I had thought. Yes, there were many places where I thought Catholic interpretation made more sense (for example, he never even considers Purgatory, though he does talk about 'helping souls move on' - which is weird as he seems agnostic on the existence of ghosts and demons! ) but he clearly has a profound faith in Christ, which I found refreshing. Also, he read his book so well. It felt like having a friend around chatting over tea. What a shame he's not written more of this - I'd read or listen to him all day. He actually gave me some fascinating insights and interpretations and wish I had an excuse to study a course with him. Read it, it's great.

Fascinating insight into a little known ministry of the CofE
