On a dark November evening, Sir Wilfred Saxonby is travelling alone in the five o'clock train from Cannon Street, in a locked compartment. The train slows and stops inside a tunnel, and by the time it emerges again minutes later, Sir Wilfred has been shot dead, his heart pierced by a single bullet.

Suicide seems to be the verdict, even though no motive can be found, but Inspector Arnold of Scotland Yard thinks again when he learns that a mysterious red light in the tunnel caused the train to slow down.

A really ingenious murder mystery from the golden age of detective fiction. Thoroughly enjoyable. I guessed who the culprit had to be well before the end, but that didn't affect my enjoyment at all. I find Gordon Griffin's narration to be a bit colourless sometimes, but he was excellent on this one.

This is a classic golden age puzzle detective story. The point is the ingenious crime and its solution, not the (rather two-dimensional) characters or plausibility of the far-fetched plot.

Although I did guess the identity of the criminal, and some of the method, I enjoyed the mental workout.

While I kind of figured out who'd done it, I didn't know for sure and couldn't work out how. And despite this sounding like an exciting idea for a murder in the tunnel, it's a very staid book. Mostly dialogue rather than action.

The biggest complaint is that the police are made to look sooooooo stupid it's unbelievable. I know in reality police investigations get fixated on suspects but I think the DI in this book would still believe his own theory of the suspect if the real murderer had done it in front of him. It was annoying in places, but still a clever plot underneath all that.
