Summary
You have to stop me from hurting anyone else. I don’t want to do these horrible things. Help me before I’m forced to do it again. And I will do it again because I have no choice. I’ve never had a choice.
In a busy shopping center, a little girl clutches a teddy bear, clinging to it in the absence of her mother, Katrina. Hours later, Katrina’s body is discovered in an abandoned building. For Detective Kim Stone, it looks like a quick, functional murder. But Kim’s instincts tell her there’s more to this senseless murder than meets the eye. What was the motive for killing a young mother out shopping with her child?
Days later, a second victim is found in a local park, her neck broken just like Katrina’s and her six-year-old son missing.
But with her colleague, Detective Stacey Wood, working on another unsolved crime and a member of the team grieving the loss of a close relative, Kim is struggling to make inroads on what is fast becoming a complex case. And when a handwritten letter from the killer lands on Kim’s desk addressed to her and pleading for help, she knows time is running out to bring the little boy home alive.
With the support of a handwriting analyst and profiler, Kim and the team begin to get inside the mind of the killer and make a shocking discovery.
Some of the victims have scratch marks on their wrists.
But these are no random scratches. The killer is using them to communicate with someone. The question is...with whom?
And if Kim doesn’t find them soon, another innocent soul will die.
Nobody does it better than the Queen of Crime, Angela Marsons.

found it tricky to get into the book which I found odd as I've read all Detective Inspector Kim Stone's storylines. I found it confusing how they deliberated who was to blame - possibly easier explanation would have made it much easier to understand. All in all, I'm very sorry to say my least enjoyed Kim Stone book yet. I'm sure there's better to come

Angela gas exceeded my expectations with this story line. After her last book I felt saddened that the story line felt flat and uninteresting. Deadly cry has renewed my last for Marston writing. great detail and hidden criminal in the mist unlikely places, kept me hooked to the end. lovely to hear the continued thread of the characters in the team life, goals and family dramas. lockdown had certainly not affected Angela's ability to design great stories. keep it up and thanks xx

Absolutely brilliant
I have always enjoyed the Kim Stone stories but this one was even better. Its been great to follow all the characters and within this book there is a true sense of strength between Kim and her team. The reading from Jan is just as good as ever, I love how there is so much continuity between the voices over the series. A true talent indeed. My only question is now, how long do I have to wait to find out about the wedding?

Not my favorite Kim Stone
I am not sure why I struggled with this Kim Stone but I did. Saying more might ruin it for someone else. However, for all of you Kim Stone fans your favorite characters are present and accounted for. Marsons does have the gift of creating wonderful characters. If you are new to the series please start with Book 0 as it was written as a prequel or Book 1. Jan Cramer is a quirky narrator but her manner works well as the series is a bit quirky. I do recommend the series as I have enjoyed the books enough to have listened to them all several times. Maybe when I do so again I will enjoy this one more.

Not Marsons’ Best
I’m going to keep it real. I get almost giddy when I see there’s a new Kim Stone novel out. Equally, I have noticed that when publishers push writers to get novels out faster, the quality of the work declines. I would be happy to wait a year or even a year and a half in between Kim Stone novels to avoid the disappointment I felt reading this clearly rushed work. This novel is convoluted, riddled with discrepancies, and things that just don’t add up. Also, I was so delighted in the last novel when it appeared that Marsons had finally retired the superfluous and irritating murderer first person narrative. You can imagine my disappointment when this sloppy technique reared its ugly head again in this novel. I’m pretty sure this is the first time I have not given a Kim Stone novel five stars. I am 100% certain this is the first time I have given a Kim Stone novel three stars. If you are a Kim Stone devotee like I am, you’ll want to read this just to stay up-to-date on the happenings of the team but otherwise don’t hope for too much.

Another Outstanding Novel
I have listened to every book in this series and it has become my all-time favorite! If you are reading this review and have not started from the very beginning with Silent Scream, I strongly recommend you do so in order to fully appreciate the badass and sarcastically funny Kim Stone and her amazing team. The stories are riveting and the interaction between the characters is so very entertaining. Equally enjoyable is the amazing talent of Jan Cramer; truly the best narrator I have ever come across. I love how she brings the characters to life with her individual dialects and accents. My favorite voice is the character of Stacy, as I find her accent delightful. I enjoy British novels and would love to one day visit the location where these novels take place. Now I have to impatiently wait for number 14! Please don’t make this Tennessee fan wait long Angela Marsons!
