About this listen

It's a race against time as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace tries to stop a grieving mother from taking the law into her own hands in Dead Man's Grip, by award winning crime writer Peter James.

A university student is killed in a tragic traffic accident while riding their bicycle. When two of the drivers involved are hunted down by a sadistic killer, Grace knows that the third driver, Carly Chase, may be next.

Carly, a solicitor, believes hiding is not an option and heads to New York to speak with the cyclist’s mother. But Grace knows about the mother’s underworld connections and that the family will stop at nothing to take an eye for an eye . . .

Although the Roy Grace novels can be listened to in any order, Dead Man's Grip is the seventh thrilling title in the bestselling series. Enjoy more of the Brighton detective’s investigations with Not Dead Yet and Dead Man's Time.

Now a major ITV series, Grace, starring John Simm.

Brilliant book, just didn't want to put it down, a different slant to a road accident that grips you from start to finish.

Peter James comes up trumps again

It's official, this book marks a genuine return to form for the Roy Grace series. "Grip" is very apt because everything here is tighter and more well-paced than the previous two books. The slightly shorter form works well meaning that the plot never lags and there's no sign of padding. The narration from Jamie Glover is a definite step up and gives this book a fresher feel.

The story itself is a belter! A very nasty but seemingly otherwise unremarkable accident has massive unforeseen consequences for those involved. James brings multiple plot strands together and once again uses his excellent local knowledge and research of Brighton and its surroundings to give his story a realistic landscape.

The characters in these books have genuine depth and their back stories inch further forward with each of the books. This one sees Grace looking forwards to fatherhood and some intriguing hints of what's to come in the form of his missing ex-wife Sandy.

However, as much as I like the regular characters I have to say the real star of this show was Tooth. Tooth "doesn't do" spoilers so I'll say no more but as bad guys go, he's a good one!

This is a series I definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys hard-edged police procedural thrillers especially now it feels like it's right back on track with this one after a bit of a dip in form previously.

He did far too much describing at times I just wished he would just get on with it.
