About this listen

Written during his time in Reading Gaol, De Profundis is Oscar Wilde's moving letter to Lord Alfred Douglas, whose relationship with Wilde led to the poet's imprisonment. Here Wilde repudiates Lord Alfred and reflects on his ordeal, acknowledging how the depths of his sorrow have helped liberate him toward a fuller, freer wisdom. Brimming with beautiful passages, De Profundis is a profound and inspiring treatise on the meaning of suffering. De Profundis is introduced by Oscar Wilde's grandson, Merlin Holland.

very well read, here is Wilde truly baring his soul, occasional bursts of extraordinary egotism can be forgiven given the dreadful tale told here.

It was a privilege to be able to listen to Oscar Wilde’s own words. To be able to try and understand him and his innermost feelings towards Lord Alfred Douglas. Oscar Wilde had such a wonderful way with words. Beautifully read and included a lovely introduction by Merlin Holland, Oscar Wilde’s grandson. Worthy of a second listen …

Great reading of a tragic story …

There was nothing to dislike of a man speaking from his heart, I’m just sorry he never got the chance to enjoy a longer life with all the plans he had started making whilst in Jail

This is a classical education of the human psyche. Absolute tragedy played out and yet he still loves him. The frenzied lust of the press and the crowds have not been abated over time.
