About this listen

Date with Justice, the ninth novel in Julia's Chapman's witty and engaging Dales Detective series, sees Delilah's brother under suspicion of murder. Can Delilah and Samson prove he's innocent?

The Dales Detective Agency is on the brink of closure.

Samson O’Brien has returned to his position as an undercover operative for the Met in London, and his relationship with sleuthing partner Delilah Metcalfe is under pressure.

Their troubles are only multiplied when an ecologist is found dead and the finger of blame is pointed firmly at Delilah’s older brother, Will.

It seems an open and shut case. An argument over an ecology report for planning permission which got out of hand, with Will known to have a hot temper. But Delilah won’t accept he’s guilty and neither will Samson.

Dropping everything, he returns to Bruncliffe to help prove Will’s innocence. But as the two detectives start digging, they unearth more than they bargained for and soon realize that the price of justice can be very costly indeed.

Following on from Date With Evil, this heart-warming and wittily charming novel is perfect for fans of Richard Osman and Robert Thorogood and cosy crime at its very best.

Critic reviews

Moving her story along at a cracking pace, Chapman has an enviable talent for sharing the ups and downs of country life. Fans of The Archers will lap it up.
Great fun! (Carol Drinkwater, actress and star of All Creatures Great and Small )
A classic whodunit set in the spectacular landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, written with affection for the area and its people (Cath Staincliffe, author of the Scott & Bailey series)
Bags of Yorkshire charm and wit
The lively characters really pull the story forward . . . the novel's pace really whips along.
Clever, cosy and refreshingly original, Date With Justice is a quintessentially Yorkshire reading treat and best imbibed with a cup of hot tea!

I have thoroughly enjoyed every book of this series so far, including this one.
The characters, the drama and mystery are very well written and the comedy has me in stitches. I love this town with it's community, and the way the author is so adept at using them all in each book.
Julia Chapman is also very good at juggling each singular storyline, whilst making sure the overarching themes and plot carryover from book to book, as we continue hear about the lives of people involved.
It's been a joy to listen to such well narrated books too. Where the voices of each character are so distinct you can visualise them in your minds eye, like watching a drama on TV.
I would highly recommend this series of books to anyone who likes mysteries.

I've really enjoyed the character development. Reading them in sequence makes sense for the development of each story. There's plenty of opportunities to develop more so I it's not the end.

Extremely good series, like to see more.

Fab narration and another great story - will be devastated when the series ends! Can’t get enough of Samson and Delilah and the other residents of Bruncliffe.

I loved these stories from the very first book. I love to listen to a book and these are just perfectly done. The narrator is spot on and the story is so believable and gripping. Just the right balance of comedy and crime, such easy listening.
I’m going to be waiting for the next instalment like a kid before Christmas!

Totally invested
