Zunächst sind es nur fragwürdige Zeitungsartikel, die von einem Monster in der Themse sprechen. Erst als Lestrade Sherlock Holmes und Doktor Watson ins Leichenschauhaus bittet, stellt sich heraus, dass tatsächlich ein "Ungeheuer" sein Unwesen treibt. Zu allem Überfluss bleibt es aber nicht nur bei einem Vorfall und Lestrade muss zusehen, wie er die Bestien einfängt. Währenddessen versuchen Holmes und Watson, den oder die Drahtzieher dahinter ausfindig zu machen. Ein Unterfangen, das ihnen schon bald zum Verhängnis wird.
