Summary

They were masters of the darkness, searching through eternity for a mistress of the light....

Alexandria Houton will sacrifice anything - even her life - to protect her orphaned little brother. But when both encounter an unspeakable evil in the swirling San Francisco mists, Alex can only cry to heaven for their deliverance.... And out of the darkness swoops Aidan Savage, a golden being more powerful, more mysterious, than any other creature of the night. The ageless Carpathian male snatches them from a hideous fate. But is Aidan Alex's salvation...or her sin? If she surrenders to Aidan's savage, unearthly seduction, and gives him the color, the light, the family he craves, will Alex truly save her brother? Or sacrifice more than her life?

Didn't enjoy.

I read this book a few years ago and enjoyed it enough for me to re-read it a few times. I loved charismatic Aiden and enjoyed the fantasy storyline. Having now had to change to audio books and knowing the book very well, i was really keen to hear this story. It was so disappointing - the narration was at times annoying, didn't capture the male protagonist's character and the voice used for the female lead Alexandria was the type of voice that men use use when they're taking the p##$ out of a woman.
I'm really sorry to leave a bad review but I just couldn't finish the book. In fact I hated it so much I'm a bit gutted.

Good book bad narration

I liked the original version better. The narrator for this version isn't as good. He isn't as able to bring the characters to life.

Ugh Alex, Mmm Aiden, and its Gregori!

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Marc Bachmann?

I was not a fan of Marc Bachmann for mainly two reasons. One, every time he did a female voice I was jarred out of the story. They were awful. Two, his pronunciation of Gregori was totally wrong. I made be biased but it hurt every time.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, Alex was probably the most annoying lady in the series. Ugh, she got on my nerves for like 3/4 of the book. Aiden and the rest of the characters were awesome.

Any additional comments?

I have read the series before ages ago but listening to them on audible is a new experience and an exciting one.

A whiny heroine and a disappointing performance.

I did not enjoy this performer, his rendition did not enhance the plight of a woman trying to find herself after conversion to a Carpathian. It reduced her to merely a whining and very annoying child. Granted, it takes almost the entire book for her to finally get it together, and the story could have used some better editing for flow. However a more nuanced performer could have made this a far less tedious listen. I had to keep taking breaks. Not sure it’s worth a credit.

Jumping to conclusions can cause lots of trouble.

I really liked this story that was entertaining and enjoyable. The characters were interesting. I was surprised by the twist with the hero when he meets the heroine for the first time.

*****
I was super impressed with Josh and his bravery being such a little guy. Aidan had to make up for how he met Alexandria while trying to get her to fall for him was new. Alexandria was brave sometimes and other times she was so upset about what happened to her and I could totally put myself in her shoes. There is a lot of action but also a lot of romance. I loved their happy ever after and I recommend reading this book. Or listening to it because I found that enjoyable as well!

6 Stars

Wish you could rate higher than 5 Stars... Read this book many years ago. Just Loved hearing this story. Seams to really expand the story to hear someone protecting the feeling of Christine Feehan characters.
Marc Bachmann did an excellent job.
A Must have in your library.

Carpathians in the U.S.

I was happy to hear Aidan’s story- the first Carpathian in the U.S. HOWEVER I found myself really annoyed with Alexandria. She careened between hysteria, anger, and TSTL. It got to the point where I couldn’t believe she could be a positive role model/parent for Joshua. He and Aidan; and Marie & Stefan made the story for me. And Gregori’s cameo - can’t wait for his comeuppance ;-)
Bachman’s voice is pleasant enough, and his projection of emotion improved as the story progressed, but it just doesn’t have enough character differentiation for my tastes.
Still a recommend if you want to follow the series.
