About this listen

Dangerous Lady is the iconic first novel by Sunday Times No.1 best seller Martina Cole which catapulted her to fame and made her the 'undisputed queen of crime writing' (Guardian). This audio edition contains a bonus interview between author and narrator and is a must for fans old and new, and listeners of Patricia Cornwell and Karin Slaughter.

Maura, the Ryan clan's youngest and only daughter, is the last person anyone expects to take on gangland London. But with her eldest brother Michael by her side she fast becomes the queen of organised crime. Smart, tough and beautiful, no one is a match for her.

But with power comes a price, and Maura is forced to put her heart on the line. She might be a dangerous lady but everyone has a weakness....

Special feature: Martina Cole chats with Annie Aldington, who narrates her audiobooks about their favourite characters, books and the world of Martina's novels to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Dangerous Lady.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved that it followed a large London family through from just after the war, up until the '80s. The most memorable bit was the audacity of the gold heist! Will definitely buy the next book to see what happens to Maura next.

Didn't know it was her first book.

First of all, I just got to say that this was my first Martina Cole book and I am hooked. I will be listening to all of her books. The characters, humour, intensity, absolutely everything was just so gripping. I often found myself planning on 1 hour and ended up doing 3 hours. I just could not stop listening. I was constantly saying to myself, 5 more minutes, 1 more chapter. Thank you so much Martina.

I also want to say that the narrator Annie Aldington is fantastic. She really does bring the characters to life. You can tell that this is not just a job to her. This woman truly loves and believes in what she’s reading and it just comes across. Thank you Annie.

Now for the story. I don’t want to ruin the experience for anyone, so I won’t spoil anything. Michael Ryan was personally my favourite character and whilst listening, all I could picture was a cockney, taller version of Tommy Shelby from peaky blinders. I honestly believe Cilian Murphy has read this book and based his performance on Michael Ryan. Of course I could be wrong, but it’s just how I feel. There was one part of this book where I had to stop reading. Anyone who has read it will know what part I’m on about. I was just so invested and a particular part I had to just stop for 2 days. I needed time to process what had happened. That’s how gripping this book is.

Now, she’s not in it a lot, but I gotta give a shout out to Mauras best friend Marge. The banter between these 2 characters was so real, so funny and so gripping. I was genuinely laughing out loud on every chapter that these 2 were together. Don’t even get me started on the banter between Sarah and Benjamin. I had to re listen to the taxi ride 3 times because of how much I was laughing. They just reminded me so much of my grandparents. Absolutely brilliant.

I can’t say no more now, not without spoiling the story. This is a must read. Happy reading everyone.

10 out of 10. Honestly !
