I really enjoyed the first book in the Yakuza Duet, so was eager to pick up this one. We left off with Jinta newly inhabited by the Kitsune with no clear understanding (for me) what that actually meant. But he was alive and that meant everything to me (and Raiden, obviously). So the story begins with Jinta discovering he’s now a shifter and can become a white fox. He enjoys playing with Raiden’s larger wolf.

All is not right in the world, though. Raiden is still the head of a criminal gang. Jinta is a reporter who is supposed to be investigating them. There’s violence, destruction, and chaos. And, increasingly, the Kitsune within Jinta wants blood. That means he’s becoming a risk to everyone around him – most especially Raiden.

Then they can’t agree on things and Jinta goes back to see his parents. Big mistake. It’s amazing he’s turned out so well, given where he came from. Raiden and Jinta also on a search for Raiden’s father in the hopes he can provide answers as to how to banish the Kitsune once and for all.

Now, I don’t read Manga, so I think some of the nuance might’ve been lost on me, but this story’s so good, I didn’t care. I got my HEA in a way I didn’t expect but that was perfect. Nick Cracknell did a brilliant job with narrating and I hope to hear more of him in the future. Even better would be more Cracknell/Ravenna productions.

Overall, I loved this second book in the Yakuza Duet, as Jinta and Raiden adjust to their new realities. Both still suffer from self-worth issues (thanks family) and the belief that they are not good enough/worthy enough for the other. Together, they seek a cure for the kitsune curse, but rival Yakuza gangs (both werewolf and human) and hunters challenge them, as does betrayal and desertion from within their own pack. This is another exciting rollercoaster ride of drama, danger, and suspense. I enjoyed the story, especially the way Jinta reached out to the kitsune spirit in an attempt to understand her and work with her to achieve a solution that could give them both what they want. I appreciated her reasons and that the author gave her some depth, making he more than a faceless vengeful spirit. There is plenty of trauma and some twists and turns before a very satisfying conclusion. To be sure, EVERYONE gets what they deserve, good and bad. The reason I gave the story only four stars was the (for me) excess of sex, that often consumed whole chapters. Whenever there was a disagreement or turmoil, Raiden and Jinta turned to sex instead of talking. Worked for stress relief, but didn't help the relationship. I would have preferred more conversation.

The narration was excellent and gave appropriate voices to the characters. (I.E. tough and a bit gruff for Raiden, quiet and sensitive for Jinta, seductive but vengeful for the kitsune, etc.)

Raiden becomes the yakuza boss here and fully embraces his role. He gets so absorbed, he neglects to protect Jinta from threats within the organization and this opens up one of my favorite romance plots. One where one of the partners has to "let the other one go" for their own safety and thus pushes them away. Jinta here also, sees for the first time what it means for Raiden to be yakuza boss and the ruthless choices he must make. It's a rocky, dark road for these two in this story but so worth it. Another great job by Nick Cracknell with these characters. As in the first book, he captures the nuances of their conflicted and changing relationship superbly.
