About this listen

Ideas don’t just happen, they don’t spring from nowhere. Ideas come to life from everything that’s already inside our brains. Because new ideas are actually a new reaction between existing ideas. This means creativity is about finding ways to put unrelated, disconnected things together. When two unrelated things come together, something new springs into existence; they form a third thing, and that becomes a new idea. That’s Crossover Creativity. The more you read, watch, observe, and consume, the more fuel for ideas you have in your brain and the more crossover creativity will happen for you.

In this latest collection of stories about creativity in real-life situations, Dave Trott presents examples of crossover creativity in action–as a guide for those who have to generate ideas in advertising, business, sport, or anywhere in the wider world.

What did I like? Every word. Why? When someone writes down what you’ve been thinking for 35 years but either haven’t been brave enough to say it or had people who want to hear it, it’s good to realise you’re not mad. I didn’t know all of the anecdotes, but I knew some. I didn’t know all of the ads, but I knew most. I didn’t know why we should hang on to the advertising of the past. I do now. Lots has changed in the world since the so-called glory days of advertising. But lots hasn’t. I think the lowest ebb has passed and thankfully we’re getting back to selling, and selling with a smile. Saving the world is for the charities. Keeping the economy moving is what advertising does. Both worthwhile causes, but only one helps people put food on the table for their kids.

I once looked down a list of speakers at an advertising event. Dave Trott was on after me. I froze. What on earth could I possibly say that a) he didn’t know and b) he’d be interested to hear? Of the 60 or so people in the room that day, I only had an audience of one - him. Yet I spoke in the last slot before lunch, and he arrived for his first talk of the afternoon halfway through nibbles. When he spoke, his common sense was simply unarguable. Yet when he asked the audience for questions, no one asked anything. What??? ‘Don’t you know who this is?’ I thought. In the shameful silence, my arm went in the air faster than I could think of something to ask. I did ask and he did reply. Later we walked to the Underground together, chatting all the way. When we finally parted, I thanked him for his time. What I really wanted to thank him for was being so human, so normal, so straightforward.

When you’re drowning in a sea of advertising bs, Dave is your lifesaver. I’ll be quoting much of this book to clients and colleagues alike over the coming months and years, begging them to buy it. No one should be allowed to wear the client badge without reading it.

Unarguable
