Summary
Oktober 1949. Aus den Dengie-Flats, einem Küstengebiet nahe dem Ort Southend-On-Sea wird eine Leiche aus dem Wasser gezogen. Eingewickelt in einen Teppich. Kopf und Beine wurden der Leiche abgetrennt. Für die abgebrühten Yard Inspectoren MacDougall und Caffrey eigentlich ein Fall wie jeder andere. Routinemäßig nehmen sie ihre Ermittlungen auf. Es gelingt, den Toten zu identifizieren. Er war bei der Polizei kein Unbekannter.
Doch warum hat man Adrian Johnston, einen mittlerweile wohlhabenden und geachteten Autohändler ermordet? Wegen der 2.500 Pfund, die Johnston am Tag seines Verschwindens bei sich hatte?
