Summary
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Everything Is Lies by Helen Callaghan.
No-one is who you think they are.
Sophia's parents lead quiet, unremarkable lives. At least that is what she's always believed.
Everyone has secrets.
Until the day she arrives at her childhood home to find a house ringing with silence. Her mother is hanging from a tree. Her father is lying in a pool of his own blood, near to death.
Especially those closest to you.
The police are convinced it is an attempted murder-suicide. But Sophia is sure that the woman who brought her up isn't a killer. As her father is too ill to talk, it is up to Sophia to clear her mother's name. And to do this she needs to delve deep into her family's past - a past full of dark secrets she never suspected were there....
What if your parents had been lying to you since the day you were born?

Engaging read
Enjoyed it a lot. Fast paced and full of suspense. The characters were credible and once started, I didn't want to put it away.

Enjoyable read on the whole.
On the whole an enjoyable read and an original storyline, however the story was sometimes quite predictable. Some of the characters could have been developed further in order to make the plot twists more dramatic and emotionally engaging. The dialogue in the story was also quite weak at times- some of the hesitations in speech was sometimes unnecessary and therefore annoying. Despite this I could hardly turn this book off and I did enjoy it!

Great idea/potential, badly crafted/developed
This is an interesting idea for a book/film, but is on the one hand lacking in depth and development for the critical plot of the story, and then drags on in the unimportant aspects.
The central theme is badly developed and imo totally unbelievable. This woman is a supposedly intelligent Cambridge graduate, yet seems to be ‘hoodwinked’ (to avoid spoilers) in no time. I found this whole ‘direction’ utterly unbelievable, without any clever or sophisticated or real ideas to pull people in. What they seduced her with and talked about/believed was utter nonsense.
Equally Sophia’s emotional reaction to major events in her life were totally unrealistic. She drifted through the story as though merely a vehicle to push the story along, rather than a real flesh and blood character with feelings, character, emotions and a life.
As such you don’t really connect with her and that was unbelievable too.
Could have been much better and I have given it three stars because the idea is a potentially good one. Like other reviews I could see it as a mini series.
The narrator for the past was a little twee for my liking. And the constant “dear heart” sounded insincere, given Sophia’s lack of emotional connection. A once vulnerable female doesn’t need to sound so obviously like a victim by an insipid narrator.
