Summary

The devastating Phryne Fisher is under fire again in her fourth mystery.

A very young man with muddied hair, a pierced ear and a blue tattoo lies cradled in Phryne's arms. But sadly, it's not another scene of glorious seduction - this time it's death. The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher, beautifully dressed in loose trousers, a cream silk shirt and a red-fox fur has just had her windscreen shot out inches in front of her divine nose. But worse is the fate of the pale young man lying on the road, his body hit by bullets, who draws his final blood-filled breath with Phryne at his side. Outraged by this brutal slaughter, Phryne promises to find out who is responsible. But Phryne doesn't yet know how deeply into the mire she'll have to go: bank robbery, tattoo parlours, pubs, spiritualist halls, and the Anarchists. Along this path, Phryne meets Peter, a battle-scarred, sexy Slav, who offers much more to her than just information. But all thoughts of these delights flee from Phryne's mind when her beloved maid, Dot, disappears. There's nothing Phryne won't do to get her back safely.

Solve another case with Phryne Fisher.

" A fresh time period and location, a feisty main character, and a well-developed sense of place distinguish this historical mystery series." ( Booklist)

Death at Victoria Dock

This is another light hearted murder mystery, starting with Miss Fisher having her window of her car short out and a young man dyeing in her arms. She gets stuck in a Bolshevik plot while trying to find a missing girl, that her father is looking for.

Excellent as usual

Any additional comments?

I always enjoy mysteries about this particular lady. She makes me laugh, makes me want to thump the nasties. A thoroughly good plot very well read as always.

Another great combination

Fantastic story, great characters and great performance - just had to knock a star off this time for the singing, can’t these bits just be read out? Apart from that it was perfect xx

Knowledge of the era shines through these well written stories, I'm totally hooked!

Loved watching the series and film so naturally keen to go to the books. I prefer audio now as reading too much text can make my eyes tired, which stops me enjoying reading. For me I'm thoroughly enjoying this series which I'm listening too in the order of release. Love all the returning characters, each book reveals a little more amidst the story. Looking forward to the next book 😊

Fun and frothy

Light and frothy fun - easy going read with plenty of humour. The actual plot was OK, but the joy of these books in the stylish and tongue in cheek writing.

Always great fun and perfectly narrated

I am listening to these in order.
This wasn’t one of my favourites, story wise, but as with all the others the narration is absolutely spot on.

An Australian accent is NOT cockney

What made the experience of listening to Death at Victoria Dock the most enjoyable?

I like the Phryne Fisher books.

What will your next listen be?

No Australian book narrated by this woman.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She was awful. Truly dreadful. She has NO idea of an Australian accent. It is not cockney or any of the London or British regional accents. Phryne may have an RP English accent but not the other characters. It totally ruined the whole book... To the point I haven't even finished listening. If I could find this book on kindle I would return it.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Intense irritation at the choice of narrator.

Any additional comments?

I have no idea who chose this narrator but it was a very poor choice. As a reader I'm sure she is fine - but for an English book. I hate hate hate her portrayal of the Australian characters - which in the books have been stated as having Australian accents. As I said, it has totally destroyed this audiobook.

A little dull.

I love the Phryne Fisher series, but this wasn't up to the usual standard. The story didn't really grab me and the authors need to have more than one storyline going on at once made it all feel a little rushed. The ending almost felt like an afterthought. The narration was great as always.
