About this listen

The issue of idolatry has been with the human race for thousands of years; the subtle temptation is always to take what is good and turn it into the ultimate good, elevating it above all other things in the search for security and meaning.

In this timely and challenging book, New York pastor Timothy Keller looks at the issue of idolatry throughout the Bible - from the worship of actual idols in the Old Testament, to the idolatry of money by the rich young ruler when he was challenged by Jesus to give up all his wealth.

Using classic stories from the Bible Keller cuts through our dependence on the glittering false idols of money, sex and power to uncover the path towards trust in the real ultimate - God. Today's idols may look different from those of the Old Testament, but Keller argues that they are no less damaging.

Culturally transforming as well as biblically based, Counterfeit Gods is a powerful look at the temptation to worship what can only disappoint, and is a vital message in today's current climate of financial and social difficulty.

This book will expose some of the idols in your heart, the things you may be looking to for satisfaction and meaning and purpose. It will teach you how to identify them and how to replace them with the message of the gospel

Must read for every Jesus follower

Speaks to the idols we all cherish. I enjoy Kellers perspective and exposition of Biblical texts showing idolatry is mans greatest problem.

Thought provoking. I read this book with friends and it helped us to dig deeper within ourselves to see our hidden and unknown idols and to root them out. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

absolutely fantastic

Tim Keller is once again right on point with challenging yet encouraging biblical wisdom to identify the common things we set our hearts on for fulfilment and meaning in life, over Christ. Without wanting to give away ‘spoilers’, he concludes in the epilogue that this is work we will never complete, having to constantly re-examine our heart throughout our life.

So much to absorb in this book that I re-listened to it as soon as I finished. The only negative to say is that it’s a shame not to have Tim reading the book himself.

A book to keep re-listening to!
