 "Costernazione" rappresenta l'animo affranto del poeta. Descrive, quindi, la pena del poeta, il quale si ritrova solo e stranito in un "evo" che egli percepisce "disanimato", in cui perfino l'aria ha perso la sua antica linfa vitale, di cui egli ricorda le magnifiche fragranze bucoliche portatrici di benessere fisico e psicologico. Cosicché, egli si costerna nella consapevolezza di trovarsi in un'epoca priva di beltà.
