About this listen

From Dave Gibbons’ earliest years copying Superman and Batman comics as a kid, to co-creating the bestselling graphic novel of all-time; Watchmen and beyond.

Presented alphabetically, with informally written anecdotes that can be listened to in order or simply dipped into, Gibbons reveals unseen comics pitches, life as the first Comics Laureate, and going from being a fanzine artist to infiltrating DC Comics in the 1970s. The book covers everything from working on Doctor Who and meeting Tom Baker to being inducted into the Eisner Hall of Fame.

Gibbons also discusses, for the first time anywhere, the reasons why he and fellow Watchmen co-creator Alan Moore no longer speak.

CONFABULATION: AN ANECDOTAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY not only entertains, but peels back the layers of a fascinating career in comics.

**This edition also features several BONUS stories recorded especially for the audiobook which do not appear in the print edition.**

To get the criticism out of the way: this audiobook needs a proof listener. Dave re-reads the same passage twice and at one point during the recording announces that he's going to re-do a passage he's already read as if he's unhappy with it. I'm not outraged by this but it seems a bit of a silly thing to let happen. It seems a bit of a silly thing to happen.

This is a great insight into a particular time in British comics in the late 1970s and beyond. Dave's personal connections with so many of his contemporary comic creators help create a world that we're allowed into. There are the humble "normal" beginnings but also Dave's experiences in America which for him seemed somewhat unattainable. There's a relatability to the author's dreams of drawing characters from his childhood like Superman and Batman. Dave doesn't disown his own fanboy appreciation for those he admires and he comes across as a decent chap. Oddly I'm not a huge fan of Watchmen and Alan Moore's unhappiness with the business does sour the episodes at times.

For me it's the stuff in England and drinking in the pub with fellow creators and attending comic marts which is the best part of the book. Dave paints this vivid romanticised picture of what the comic world was like in the late 70's/ early 80's. Exactly how I envisioned it would be.

Exactly what I thought - and hoped - it would be,

A engaging audiobook, told in an inventive ‘A to Z’ manner. I’d like to have heard more about the 2000AD years and a little less of his beef with Alan Moore. Amiable enough narration.

A Good Autobiography
