About this listen

National Book Award, Fiction, 1997

Here's the gripping audiobook version of the million-selling novel. A soldier wounded in the American Civil War, Inman turns his back on the carnage of the battlefield and begins the treacherous journey home to Cold Mountain - and to Ada, the woman he loved before the war began.

As Inman attempts to make his way across the mountains, through the devastated landscape of a soon-to-be-defeated South, Ada struggles to make a living from the land her once-wealthy father left when he died. Neither knows if the other is still alive.

"Magnificent." ( Observer) "Audio intensifies the effect of Frazier's remarkable gift for quirky, conversational prose that has both the rhythm and the intensity of poetry." ( The Times)

The description of nature sits poignantly alongside some harrowing events, following Inman and Ada's journeys of spiritual growth and acceptance of life. Loved it.

Beautiful writing of a moving journey

‘They stood wary, about the number of paces apart specified for duelists. Not clasping heart to heart as Inman had imagined, but armed against each other, weapons glinting hard light into the space between them….. He thought, four years gone warring, but back now on home ground and I’m no better than a rank stranger here. A wandering pilgrim in my own place. Such is the price I’ll pay for the past four years. Firearms standing between me and everything I want’

I believe this novel will have at least some sort of influence on whoever reads it. The story contrasts itself constantly. Hopeful and heartwarming one second and then completely devastating the next. It's gritty and realistic.

Makes you feel like a better person.
