About this listen

Read by the author, Melody Beattie.

Have you lost sight of yourself while addressing the needs of others?
Is someone else's problem your problem?

Fully revised and updated, with a new chapter on trauma and anxiety, this modern classic – that has already sold over 7 million copies across the globe – will help you heal and grow.

If, like so many others, you've lost sight of your own life in the drama of tending to a loved one's self-destructive behaviour, you may be codependent – and you may find yourself in this book.

A cultural phenomenon that has helped heal millions of readers, this modern classic holds the key to understanding codependency and unlocking its hold on your life. Melody Beattie's compassionate and insightful look into codependency – the concept of losing oneself in the name of helping another – has helped to guide millions of readers towards the understanding that they are powerless to change anyone but themselves and that caring for the self is where healing begins.

With personal reflections, exercises, and instructive stories drawn from Beattie's own life and the lives of those she's counselled, Codependent No More will help you break old patterns and maintain healthy boundaries, and offers a clear and achievable path to healing, hope, freedom and happiness.

This revised edition includes an all-new chapter on trauma and anxiety – subjects Beattie has long felt need to be addressed within the context of codependency – making it even more relevant today than it was when it first entered the international conversation over thirty-five years ago.

Critic reviews

If you have been around me for a minute, you have heard me absolutely rave about a book called Codependent No More, it changed my life. I don’t say that often and I don’t say that lightly . . . Besides my wonderful therapist, the best teacher I have encountered, the one who has led me the absolute most in this, is Melody Beattie (Jen Hatmaker, For the Love podcast)
A pioneering voice in self-help literature (Glennon Doyle, We Can Do Hard Things podcast)
Melody Beattie is an American phenomenon . . . she understands being overboard, which helps her throw best-selling lifelines to those still adrift

I read a lot of books on self-help, and when I needed a book on codependency, I reached out for this one. And I am so glad I did. this is one of the best written books I have read in a long time The author is not only extremely knowledgeable but she is also very compassionate and the book is helpful and hits home on many levels. Not just on the exact topic. Highly recommend it!

I loved this. The narrator is matter of fact and open about her own experiences and this for me is always the most relatable read.

I am autistic. I am studying to be a counsellor. In doing this I am learning most about myself. Therapy and self care books aren't always appropriate for me neither is counselling. I need a different way. This read has opened up a whole new perspective for me which I am fascinated with. It has helped me to let go of some 'whys' in my life so far - mostly why did i let someone do this to me. It has taught me different ways of thinking about situations completely. I have thoroughly enjoyed this and highly recommend.

Listen! if you've been on the receiving end of someone else's problems!

This book is a game changer. I saw someone post it as a recommendation and thought I'll give it a go. Not long into listening to it, I was hit by a bolt of lightning, the realisation of what I had been doing all these years, how it had led to the place where I am today of incredible loneliness, wasted opportunities and destroyed love. I cried as layer after layer of my behaviour was explained, the rages, anger and frustration stemmed from my co dependency. This morning I woke up ready to start to make the changes, to go deep inside to properly heal, to love myself more, to be the person I had wanted to be. Thank you to the author for giving us this incredible book of insights and revelations. It is the start of transforming my life

This blew my mind
