Zweig est vraiment le fils que Freud aurait aimé avoir : Il apprécie en lui sa "modestie intérieure" tout en étant séduit par l'écrivain, si proche à bien des égards d'Arthur Schnitzler qu'il considérait comme son "frère jumeau" (Roland Jaccard).
Pendant trente ans, Freud et Zweig vont échanger des lettres dans lesquelles percent l'admiration, et même une certaine affection, qu'ils ont l'un pour l'autre. Freud considère très vite Zweig comme un écrivain visionnaire, et Zweig est un des premiers à entrevoir le génie de son ainé.
