About this listen

1942, Nazi-occupied France. Sandrine, a spirited and courageous nineteen-year-old, finds herself drawn into a Resistance group in Carcassonne - codenamed 'Citadel' - made up of ordinary women who are prepared to risk everything for what is right.

And when she meets Raoul, they discover a shared passion for the cause, for their homeland, and for each other.

But in a world where the enemy now lies in every shadow - where neighbour informs on neighbour; where friends disappear without warning and often without trace - love can demand the highest price of all...

Critic reviews

A lovely, fat, comfy wodge of a book, packed with suspense and romance ... A thrilling adventure and a truly epic love story (Kate Saunders)
A breathtaking tale of daring and sacrifice that makes a triumphant finale to Mosse's Languedoc trilogy (Fanny Blake)
The much-anticipated third part of Kate Mosse's Languedoc trilogy is finally here ... This action-packed epic contains everything we've come to expect - mystery, adventure and long-buried secrets just waiting to be uncovered (Book of the Month)
A deeply satisfying literary adventure, brimming with all the romance, treachery and cliffhangers you would expect from the genre. It is also steeped in a passion for the region, its history and legends, and that magical shadow world where the two meet
Nobody beats Mosse for local texture and atmosphere. As the call to the resistance sounds over the land, she orchestrates a shattering climax
Mosse has a masterly feel for time and place . . . A remarkable achievement
Expect an energetic mystery about Nazi-occupied France
A suitably thumping and satisfying conclusion to Mosse's world-conquering Languedoc trilogy
Mosse's writing is so evocative you can almost feel the Midi sun on her characters necks, as well as the frantic beating of their hearts
It's a proper adventure story, engrossing and packed with suspense at every turn of the page
As with it's predecessors, the deeper theme of Citadel is the fight against the evil of intolerance. Mosse's descriptions of the majestic stone ruins of Carcassonne and the idyllic landscape around it shimmer with authenticity
Citadel, the concluding volume of Mosse's French Trilogy, is also her best ... Fans can expect a passionate finale to a series rooted in a region where history and legend lock horns
The sense of setting and period seeps from every page ... we live through plucky Sandrine's life and loves in the French Resistance, all the way to the powerful and utterly shattering end.
As with the first two books a touch of the gothic and a dash of the occult run through the writing, but the balance between the distant and recent past is here at its best (Elizabeth Buchan)
Infused with local atmosphere and featuring a wealth of fascinating historical information, the novel combines a thrilling adventure with an epic love story
The thrilling conclusion to her Languedoc trilogy . . . a mix of Girls Own adventure and wrenching war history
Full of action, romance and supernatural mystery, it cracks along at a great pace, making it an engaging and easy read

This is in my opinion the best kate mosse has written , she has done a superb job in transporting you to war torn france ,her attention to detail with village life in france is fantastic, I live in southern france , so it is easy for me to visualise this alongside the excellent descriptions from ms mosse, .Because the characters are described in such detail, you feel an empathy for them . It bought tears to my eyes as I felt emotionally involved !!

Gripping from the start

We have used all of the trilogy as in-car entertainment as we drive from our home in central France to,and throughout our holidays in the Midi, based in Carcassonne. All 3 are marvellous works of well researched fiction, but Citadel is the best of the bunch. I think it is perhaps Finty Williams' superior narration which tips the balance in Citadel's favour.
Kate Mosse strikes an excellent counterpoint between her description of the bucolic, tranquil atmosphere of the rural scenes and the grim and disturbing scenes of violence.

Whilst the spiritual dimension is less convincing than in the other 2 books, I found the plot and characterisation more so. So much so, Citadel can be read simply as a very satisfying drama / adventure story. However, the last couple of chapters and the Epilogue still have me in tears, even after several listens! Fabulous story telling alround.

Wonderfully crafted spirit of time and of place

I was entranced to the end and felt that I was there with the characters

What an excellent book

After reading the first two books in this series, this was very disappointing and had little to do with the first two. There was very slight reference to the story line of the first two books and when it was mentioned, it was confusing. The story line was also dragged out and could have been shorter.
Had it have been a stand alone book about WW2 and the resistance, it would not have been as disappointing. Personally, I wouldn’t have read it. I like earlier history that I know little about. This story line was far too recent in time and I have read and heard lots of truth and fiction about the war. So was less interesting to me.
I wouldn’t recommend it.
