Bohaterem tej powieści epistolarnej jest młody poeta, marzyciel, do szaleństwa zakochany w pięknej Locie - narzeczonej, a potem żonie Alberta. Nie mogąc zdobyć wzajemności ukochanej, Werter popełnia samobójstwo.
Po pierwszej publikacji powieści wśród młodych romantyków pojawiła się moda na naśladowanie głównego bohatera, począwszy od noszenia podobnego stroju (niebieski frak z żółtą kamizelką), a na samobójstwach kończąc.
