Un romanzo d'esordio che "con una scrittura adrenalinica" per usare le parole di Fruttero e Lucentini "strappa dal già visto cortili, sotterranei, scali ferroviari, ex macellai", restituendoci una città intensa, ambigua, torbidamente poetica. Vera.

Leggendolo mi viene il mal di stomaco addosso

Uffà, che libro mal fatto. All'epoca provavo a leggere Dies Irae dell'autore. Mi trovavo non intelligente abbastanza per capacitarlo. E adesso questo...
Mi posso benissimo immaginare il signor Genna. Un sapientone che parla di continuo, uno che sa lunga di ogni connessione geopolitica ed economica e se non sei ben informato ti guarda con occhi così beffardi che vuoi morire. Meno male che a tutto ciò viene uno stile quasi adolescente di scrivere. Maldestro. Irritante. Un romanzo d'esordio, bene. Ma se dal protagonista sappiamo solo che ha sonno per tutto il corso del libro e NIENT'ALTRO dico che si tratta di un romanzo sgradevole. Non è atmosferico, non è credibile, non è ben ritmato e ben costruito. Basta così e mille grazie, non voglio più Genna in vita mia.
Ma il signor Lamonica è stato un narratore bravissimo. Andavo fino in fondo nel 'Catrame' solo per poter ascoltare la sua voce, lL'unico chiarore tra i nei.
