About this listen

Cary Raditz’s book Carey: Genesis of the Song, is not just an intimate and surprising portrait of Joni Mitchell at the very point she became famous—it is a front-line account of a time, place and attitude that have passed into legend. This is the story of a man who found himself trapped in a song, and the extraordinary events that led up to it.

Such vivid anecdotes, written with virtuoso verve. The author, who showcases remarkably engaging storytelling skills on par with the greatest racconteurs, seems to do so effortlessly and confidently, which makes for a very enjoyable read. He clearly had a gift, à la Anthony Bourdain, for finding himself spontaneously in adventurous and colourful situations, and I enjoyed reading about them as much as I did the details of his multi-decade affection for Joni. It also made me nostalgic for all that travel we all did before cellphones and the internet took a lot of the challenge out of our adventures.

Loved this rocambolesque Technicolor romp through the epic 60s and 70s.

Stunning evocation of a slice of significant 60’s and early 70’s history. A personal travelogue, a keenly recalled memoir and a damn good read.

Great read
