About this listen

It is 1941 and Captain Antonio Corelli, a young Italian officer, is posted to the Greek island of Cephallonia as part of the occupying forces. At first he is ostracised by the locals, but as a conscientious soldier, whose main aim is to have a peaceful war, he proves in time to be civilised, humorous - and a consummate musician. When the local doctor's daughter's letters to her fiancé go unanswered, the working of the eternal triangle seems inevitable. But can this fragile love survive as the war gets closer and the lines are drawn between invader and defender?

Would you listen to Captain Corelli's Mandolin again? Why?

I would listen again because it was well read and very enjoyable throughout. It made me want to see the film until I heard who the actors were, don't want this version to be replaced in my memory.

What about Michael Maloney’s performance did you like?

The characters were performed well without the mix of accents sounding silly.

Any additional comments?

Sometimes the volume got too loud for dramatic emphasis and when I had headphones in this became an issue.

Don't want to watch Nicolas Cage ruin this now

Story is superb and the narration is pretty good, barring a few ear splitting loud moments! Ending made my heart ache!

Beautiful prose, high emotion, clear narration

Possibly one of the best books I've ever read - the author set the scene perfectly and created characters whom I was rooting far. Made me laugh and cry.
However, I feel the book lost its way after Corelli left on the boat, which is where I feel the story should have ended. I was not engaged at all in the happenings after this and characters and events were not presented with the same depth and humour. The ending was unsatisfying, unrealistic and felt rushed. It also seemed like an excuse to relive earlier parts of the book (and like a scrabble to reference as many objects from earlier in the book as possible)...as if to remind the reader that the writing was of greater quality a few chapters back. Disappointment over this later part of the book has somewhat diminished my love of the first half.

I would read again, but would stop at the point mentioned above.

Enjoyed the narration but it did seem to get a little melodramatic in later chapters.

Excellent... Until it wasn't
