About this listen

READ BY JOSHUA JACKSON AND EMILY ELLET! Fate brings together a ballet teacher and a hockey player in this big-hearted novel about second chances and taking risks by the bestselling author Entertainment Weekly calls the “master of witty banter.”

Once upon a time teenage Aurora Evans met a hockey player at the Mall of America. He was from Canada. And soon, he was the perfect fake boyfriend, a get-out-of-jail-free card for all kinds of sticky situations. I can't go to prom. I'm going to be visiting my boyfriend in Canada. He was just what she needed to cover her social awkwardness. He never had to know. It wasn't like she was ever going to see him again...

Years later, Aurora is teaching kids’ dance classes and battling panic and eating disorders—souvenirs from her failed ballet career—when pro hockey player Mike Martin walks in with his daughter. Mike’s honesty about his struggles with widowhood helps Aurora confront some of her own demons, and the two forge an unlikely friendship. There’s just one problem: Mike is the boy she spent years pretending was her “Canadian boyfriend.”

The longer she keeps her secret, the more she knows it will shatter the trust between them. But to have the life she wants, she needs to tackle the most important thing of all—believing in herself.

I bought this audiobook because I like listening to Joshua Jackson read (loved Oracle too) but fell in love with this book. Great story of two somewhat ‘damaged’ people finding each other and learning to live again. Really enjoyable.

Fab listen

This was great! But I will be honest, these MCs were almost too emotionally mature, too responsible, and too tepid in their relationship and their conflicts. For a story that tackles some heavy topics (ED, emotional abuse of a parent, and loss of a spouse) extremely well (like the best I’ve encountered) it lacked a surprising amount of emotional tension. This took low angst to another level, and was almost squeaky clean in terms of spice. None of this was objectively bad, it just didn’t compel me as I’d hoped.

If you enjoy super low-angst, low-drama, low-steam—you will love this!!! Mike and Aurora were lovely and their personal growth was great to listen to even if their romantic arc was so slow and lacking tension I could have missed it.

Narration was sublime.

I still don’t get why Aurora called Mike by his full name (Mike Martin) for literally the entire book, in her head. It was distracting as hell…

Lovely, if a little too tepid

The story was beautiful. complex and well written, sweet and sad. Great listen. Both narrators were great, but Joshua Jackson had this ability to totally take me on the journey.

Joshua Jackson's narration soothes the soul.

Oh my! I listened to the audiobook version of Canadian Boyfriend by Jenny Holiday, and boy am I glad that I did. The narrators brought the characters to life so beautifully — their voices added so much depth and charm to the story, and I found myself completely drawn in from the very beginning.

I loved that the romance had a slow-burn quality to it; it gave the characters space to grow and made their connection feel authentic and earned. Plus, the occasional bit of swearing added a fun, realistic edge to the dialogue that I really appreciated.

This book was such a joy to listen to — heartwarming, funny, and full of that delicious romantic tension that keeps you hooked. Highly recommend the audiobook if you’re looking for a feel-good love story with a bit of spice and a lot of heart!
