About this listen

Victorian charlatans imperil reality when they unwittingly summon a horror from the void

LONDON, 1891. Elizabeth Whittle and William Grant enjoy scalping London’s bourgeoisie, taking on the personas of grand spiritist Cerulia Trent and her agent to connect the living and the dead. When a detective arrives, sniffing out fraud with a scientifically minded spiritualist society, the duo decides to take one last job before escaping to the continent.

However, their final séance ends horrifically … and soon Lizzie isn’t Lizzie anymore. William, desperate to banish whatever monster they summoned, is soon embroiled in an electrifying eldritch mystery where he makes a deal with the devil to save his friend and stop an even greater evil from transforming the known world.

Was a tiny bit nervous about listening to this. I’ve encountered too many poorly conceived and badly delivered “adaptations” of popular RPGs but the should’ve had more faith in Chaosium!

For me, this was brilliantly written and expertly delivered (barring just one or too novel pronunciations).

The story feels like it came straight off the gaming table, with cosmic foreboding interspersed with a finely judged degree of inter-regional UK banter.

The inclusion of Det Ins Craddock of Scotland Yard as “an NPC” was a great touch and added to the sense that we were kind of eavesdropping an actual play campaign, reimagined as a book.

Bottom line: I really, really enjoyed it. Can’t wait for the next one…. There will be a next one won’t there?

I am a big fan of the Cabal series, so I was excited to read this new Lovecraftian themed book. I can only say it did not disappoint! The narration is masterfully done and fits the dark undertones of the book.

Another hit for Jonathan L. Howard

Enjoyed this immensely. More ‘pulpy’ than a lot of Mythos writing and all the better for it. Lots of references for readers/listeners to pick up on, some spooky sections, not ‘scary’ horror but full of atmosphere. I’ll check out the authors other work. Hoping that they return to this world soon.

Narrator was excellent throughout.

My own thoughts are, the narrator started ok but improved inestimably as the book progressed (Aussie accents notwithstanding as a fair representation of Mancunian ones can be applauded). Overall, very well delivered.
The story itself, I found this to have great characters, plenty going on without being perplexing, very good rhythm. I'll have to cross my fingers and hope this is a series which continues, well done JLH 👏

Typical Jonathan L Howard... Fantastic

sorry.... this is the author who gave us Carter & Lovecraft and After the end of the world, possibly in my mind, the two best Lovecraftian novels of this decade.
and we get this!
John...get the rights for C&L and blow our minds with their continuing adventurers. Don't hobble yourself with this type of thing. you have created marvels with the C&L characters. Own it!
