About this listen

From Chuck Tingle, author of the USA Today bestselling Camp Damascus, comes a new heart-pounding story about what it takes to succeed in a world that wants you dead.

Misha is a jaded scriptwriter who has been working in Hollywood for decades, and has just been nominated for his first Oscar. But when he's pressured by his producers to kill off a gay character in the upcoming season finale—"for the algorithm"—Misha discovers that it's not that simple.

As he is haunted by his past, and past mistakes, Misha must risk everything to find a way to do what's right—before it's too late.

After a fragmented start this shaped up to be a enjoyable delve into a possible entertainment future. But I was left with questions.

Beware what you dream up

Initially I wasn't too pushed on this, and it admittedly took me a few tries to get into it.

I thought a half-in-the-closet gay writer from rural USA making his way in Hollywood was so uninteresting and bland, but I'm glad I stuck with it. Misha is a really complex character, and I can't even speak about the plot without ruining it, as it goes places I genuinely would have never predicted.

If you're fan of horror, LGBTQ+ stories (that isn't the standard trope of course), sci-fi, weird stuff, and well-written characters and motives, you can't go wrong.

The "script" chapters in the audiobook however were awful, it sounded like they were being read by secondary school actors from the inside of a wardrobe. Thankfully the main narrator who does 90% of the book was fantastic.

Fantastic and unexpected

I loved this, from start to finish. So many clever themes running along together and such fine writing.
Thank you, Chuck!

Brilliant

I loved this book and found myself speeding through it, always eager to see what happens next. From the title I expected something a bit silly and camp. I wasn’t ready for one of the best horror reads of all time!

It’s a solid horror story that will keep you on the edge of your seat - which for most of us is enough, right? But, on top of that we’re also treated to a relatable protagonist who’s more than just a spunky pincushion for some killer’s knife. Misha faces seemingly insurmountable odds as the sum of his own past traumas come back to haunt him. Literally.

Within the fabric of what is already a good horror story, is a commentary on the hypocrisy of queer representation in today’s world. It’s done to perfection, never overwhelming the narrative, but ever-present. Many writers have fumbled this in the past, but Bury Your Gays has a poignant and important message that moved me to tears at points for all the right reasons. It openly calls out queer stereotypes in modern media, challenging them, all while giving a masterclass in how to do it properly.

Even if the LGBT+ agenda is not a particular interest to you, don’t let it put you off. There’s nothing shocking, crude or overtly romantic and it would be a shame for you to miss out on what is one of the best horror stories of modern times.

Oh and unlike many horror stories it has a deeply satisfying ending. That’s not to say it’s all rainbows and butterflies, but it’s satisfying nonetheless.

I HIGHLY recommend and hope you enjoy it too!

Probably A LOT Better Than You’re Thinking It’s Gonna Be!
