About this listen

"A combat veteran's astute look at the Vietnam War, both captivating and emotionally forthcoming." (Kirkus Reviews)

In this frank, engaging memoir, Captain Chamberlain chronicles the missions, personal courage and sacrifice of the Marines he was privileged to command; painfully recalls the unspeakable order he and his Marines were forced to obey; and the cover-up which followed. Nearly four decades later, Captain Chamberlain makes right what was wrong; brings closure to the family of a fallen and abandoned warrior; and attempts to put to rest the guilt which plagued his military career and life. Unlike most books on the Viet Nam War, this book is written at a tactical level by a Marine Company Commander who was there.

This memoir has the beginnings that may seem familiar to other well-written Vietnam memoirs... Until what happens around half way through, tore apart the junior officers concept of what being a Marine was all about.

He starts a young Marine Officer, "doing his bit in country" believing in all the values and traditions of the Corps he serves....until that fateful day. The rest of the memoir takes a turn like no other - and this memoir doesn't end on his "freedom bird" flight home - it ends several decades later - well beyond the year 2000.

His battleground becomes much closer to home, as he fights for justice, and struggles to come to terms with what happened to his fallen brother in arms. This twist is like no other I have ever come across in a Vietnam memoir. It is well written, very deep, and his struggles were tough.

I really hope writing this memoir went a small way into healing the pain and burden the author carries. I briefly communicated with the officer on the back of finishing this - only the second time reading a memoir compelled me to look up and reach out to the author.
