Summary

Welcome to White Haven - where secrets can be deadly.

White Haven has a history of witchcraft, but the locals don't know that there are real witches living among them, and Avery is one of them. When she has a forbidding premonition and finds a series of clues all hinting at the mysterious past of her hometown, perched on the Cornish coast, Avery realizes that the witches are missing a vital part of their history.

Five missing grimoires...

And when the annoying, but very handsome Alex Bonneville shares the same premonition, they know trouble's coming. Against her better judgement, Avery teams up with the other witches to uncover the truth, only to find that someone will do anything to stop them.

Now is the time to uncover the past. Now is the time to reclaim their heritage.

And they risk everything to do it.

If you love urban fantasy with a twist of romance and plenty of action and magic, you'll love this book. Buy this fast-paced series starter now, and prepare to be awake all night!

struggled with the story at times

I'm not sure whether it was the story or the narration, but at times this felt rather clunky and unengaging. I didn't really warm to any of the characters or feel drawn in.

Need to change the reader

good book but the readers voice is grating. She cannot get the different voices right and the lead sounds like a child talking when she is in her 20's

Great Story

Can’t wait to get hold of the next one! I agree with the other reviewers about the narrator she sound like she would be great at children’s books. Any time there was a romantic sentence she didn’t come across well!

Not Good in audiobook

The book is great. The whole series is amazing but audiobook not so good. The narrator is not best suited for this book which makes it difficult to follow.
Big disappointment as I love the series and was really looking forward to have it on audiobooks.

Enjoyable

I had already bought the kindle edition and was enjoying very much so decided to get the audio book. At first I thought the narrator was awful but she has grown on me. At the beginning she read like she was over excited so this made her shout in places. Her voice depictions aren't too great either. BUT she does eventually calm down and towards the end she delivers the lines quite emotionally and I'm starting to love the story even more. I have already started on book 2 of the kindle edition and I'm.told that book 2 is being recorded at moment so I will be purchasing it once it gets released.

As for the storyline I love it. Yes its predictable in places and I find it amusing that most them either own their own businesses or have very wealthy backgrounds but the mystery around the witches and their hidden gromoires is interesting and exciting. I can't wait for more audible editions.

Good story terrible narration

The story was spoilt by the dreadful narration - all grittiness was destroyed as it was read like a children’s bedtime book - such a shame as it’s put me off listening the sequel.

Sorry but didn’t enjoy at all.

The story itself was written in cliches and seemed to have a lot of fillers, descriptions that didn’t aid the story at all. This was made worse by the narration which would have been more suited to young children’s books. Janine would definitely keep toddlers interested with her loudness and over expression, but for a story like this it was not made believable at all. You feel no warmth to any of the characters because of this. I still have 4 hrs to go, I am surprised I have gotten this far, it is only for the fact I purchased it and do not like wasting money. But if I’m honest it is painful to listen to. I’m so sorry to all involved, I know you put a lot of time and effort in to this, but it’s the first audible book that I think I probably won’t finish. I bought this after listening to the whole Genevieve Jack Grateful Knight series narrated by Brittany Pressley, I bought every book in that series and could not stop listening. Night and Day with this book.

Love the story but the narrator didn’t set the right mood

I would have enjoyed it more reading it myself. I listen to books while I work. The intensity and suspension was missing. A person died and it was just ….. boring no OMG. It felt a bit childish. It was only when she would say what someone was feeling that you got the emotion. I am about to start the next book on audio and hope it’s better.

cliffhanger

it took me a while to get into, but once I did it sucked me in. it is Harry Potter for adults and the world of magic which it paints is alluring. My main issue is that nothing is resolved in this book and we are left dangling. I appreciate that it is part of a series, however the best series like Aaronovitch's River series are self contained novels in themselves.
