Story
One day, I’m married, living in Seattle, and magic isn’t real. The next, I’m divorced and living in the guest room of my ex’s hotter-than-sin cousin’s place in Savannah and talking to an animated skeleton named Robert. I have to admit, Robert isn’t my worst date. At 41, I didn’t think I’d be starting over. But I’ll be damned if my ex thinks I’m down and out because he pulled a fast one on me. When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it.

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

Okay, so I'm in trouble. Big trouble. I'm broke. Worse, my boyfriend of five years just dumped me. What do I do? I move in with my three eccentric aunts in their family home, Davenport House. Sounds exciting, only this massive farmhouse likes to eat men. If I were a regular human, I would have run out screaming like a banshee. As a witch - I do absolutely nothing. Hey, maybe they deserved it? I'm back in Hollow Cove, the flamboyant paranormal community, where nymphs, werewolves, trolls, shifters, witches, and other paranormals live comfortable lives away from prying human eyes.

As a college student, I spend my days in class and my evenings selling sage to PTA moms who do moon rituals to manifest better parking spaces. My best friend is a cat who likes pizza, and a “night out” includes hand delivering mysterious packages to the local “coven” of small business owners who repeatedly invite me to their meetings - clothing optional. My life is weird. But it’s not magic. Magic isn’t real. At least, that’s what I believed - right up until the moment he walks into my store.

In a world of darkness where royal vampires are in charge, I spend my days working as a knight in the city formerly known as London. Instead of a lance and a horse, I rely on my trusty axe, Babe, and ride the occasional dragon. Every day, new threats emerge that require a dash of magic and a dollop of attitude. Naturally, danger comes with the territory. What no one knows is just how dangerous it is for me. If our vampire overlords discover what I am, they’ll execute me on the spot — no questions asked — which is why I avoid them at all costs. Until now.

I had no idea how those words would change my life. Or how they’d changed my life already...until the day the most dangerous man I’ve ever met waltzed onto my farm and left us a death sentence. In an invitation. My younger brother has been chosen for the prestigious, secret magical school hidden within the folds of our mundane world. A place so dangerous, they don’t guarantee you’ll make it out alive. If he doesn't go, our entire family will be killed. It’s the same invitation my older brother received three years ago - the same place where he mysteriously died.

Some people are ordained for greatness. Those people usually have a lot of drama in their life. Drama I happily do without. I live in a forgotten corner of nowhere for a reason: there is safety in anonymity. I have enough problems just trying to get by. But when Kieran, a sinfully sexy demigod at the pinnacle of power, crashes into my life, suddenly my whole world is turned upside down. He’s harboring a deadly secret, one that could destroy all he holds dear. He thinks I’m the key to his salvation, and he wants me to help him claim vengeance. He also wants me with a passion.

Summary
Welcome to White Haven - where secrets can be deadly.
White Haven has a history of witchcraft, but the locals don't know that there are real witches living among them, and Avery is one of them. When she has a forbidding premonition and finds a series of clues all hinting at the mysterious past of her hometown, perched on the Cornish coast, Avery realizes that the witches are missing a vital part of their history.
Five missing grimoires...
And when the annoying, but very handsome Alex Bonneville shares the same premonition, they know trouble's coming. Against her better judgement, Avery teams up with the other witches to uncover the truth, only to find that someone will do anything to stop them.
Now is the time to uncover the past. Now is the time to reclaim their heritage.
And they risk everything to do it.
If you love urban fantasy with a twist of romance and plenty of action and magic, you'll love this book. Buy this fast-paced series starter now, and prepare to be awake all night!

Could not finish it
It’s a sort of Girls’ Own with magic. When I read how impossibly handsome a man character is, and how the heroine does not realise her own attractions, I immediately cringe, but try to continue.
It’s also serialised so this book is part of a greater story, but I won’t be following it.

Sorry but didn’t enjoy at all.
The story itself was written in cliches and seemed to have a lot of fillers, descriptions that didn’t aid the story at all. This was made worse by the narration which would have been more suited to young children’s books. Janine would definitely keep toddlers interested with her loudness and over expression, but for a story like this it was not made believable at all. You feel no warmth to any of the characters because of this. I still have 4 hrs to go, I am surprised I have gotten this far, it is only for the fact I purchased it and do not like wasting money. But if I’m honest it is painful to listen to. I’m so sorry to all involved, I know you put a lot of time and effort in to this, but it’s the first audible book that I think I probably won’t finish. I bought this after listening to the whole Genevieve Jack Grateful Knight series narrated by Brittany Pressley, I bought every book in that series and could not stop listening. Night and Day with this book.

Enjoyable
I had already bought the kindle edition and was enjoying very much so decided to get the audio book. At first I thought the narrator was awful but she has grown on me. At the beginning she read like she was over excited so this made her shout in places. Her voice depictions aren't too great either. BUT she does eventually calm down and towards the end she delivers the lines quite emotionally and I'm starting to love the story even more. I have already started on book 2 of the kindle edition and I'm.told that book 2 is being recorded at moment so I will be purchasing it once it gets released.
As for the storyline I love it. Yes its predictable in places and I find it amusing that most them either own their own businesses or have very wealthy backgrounds but the mystery around the witches and their hidden gromoires is interesting and exciting. I can't wait for more audible editions.

Love the story but the narrator didn’t set the right mood
I would have enjoyed it more reading it myself. I listen to books while I work. The intensity and suspension was missing. A person died and it was just ….. boring no OMG. It felt a bit childish. It was only when she would say what someone was feeling that you got the emotion. I am about to start the next book on audio and hope it’s better.

A bit formulaic and simplistic.
The quality of the writing and editing is pretty poor. The written speech is unnatural and the plot predictable. Add to that a terrible narrator and safe to say I won’t be downloading further instalments. I listened to it all but only because I had a long, boring drive to get through.

Too Slow and too Many long pauses
The narration was too slow and there were too many long pauses. I was listening to this at a speed of 1.5 and still the pauses were killing me. I might try to read this book, but don't waste an audible credit. There are far better books out there to use your credits on this.
