Short but packs a punch

I was delighted to win this audiobook as I always wanted to acquaint myself with John Nicholl's work. As it is a relatively short listen, it only took me two sunbathing sessions to listen to the brilliant narrator's performance. Having been a victim of a bullying father, I felt huge empathy for the poor wife. The story grabbed me by the throat from the start and the tension was maintained until a satisfying conclusion. Well worth a listen.

"The last throw of the dice."

What does Jake Urry bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Jake Urry has, arguably, the most sinister reading voice in audio when he decides to use it. And in this short novella by John Nichols he uses it to perfection.
Cathy has been married for three years to a police inspector, respected and liked at work. Unfortunately for Cathy, at home he is a monster, taking pleasure from the pain he inflicts on her, both physically and mentally. When she discovers she is pregnant for the second time, she decides she can't let him kill this unborn child as he did the first. But how can she Saxe herself and her baby when even her mother doesn't believe what she tells her ...

Especially terrifying given that this sort of domestic violence and subjugation is not just a fictional concept but only too real for many women, Jake Urry's reading of Bully Boy Blue intensifies the awfulness of the situation, the desperation and fear of never being free - and the terrible way out that Cathy chooses. But the most frightening part is the ending ...

A dark tale not to be missed by fans of psychological thrillers.

Great Short Story

From the 1st chapter you always know what John Nicholl's books are about, he doesn't hold back on the punches or try to lead you gently to a subject thats best not discussed,
He is hard hitting and fast paced, you get to know the characters so well you feel like you are living their story, which makes the terror they are experiencing even harder to read.
Bully Boy Blue is about an abusive husband and a wife who falls pregnant and knows for the sake of her child she has to leave him.
My only criticism is I wish this book was longer I could listen to Jake Urry narrate John Nicoll's books till the cows come home, always such a great partnership.

I throughly recommend this book it was a good story.

Brilliant short story

A thought provoking dark novella about an abusive relationship between husband and wife. Kathy must be smart and try to find a way out of her awful situation without tipping her husband off about her plans. You must read/listen to it to find out whether she succeeds or not.
This is a fast paced, well written short story narrated brilliantly by Jake Urry. I would definitely recommend it.

Short story with unusual twist

This 2 hour story was well constructed within the parameters of a short story. The time gaps were well explained and the Welsh accent of Jake Urry was well matched to the tale despite the fact that the main character was a woman. I hope you enjoy the conclusion as much as I did; it was novel.

Short and Intensive

Any additional comments?

I received this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review.

This was an amazing book!! It deals with an abusive marriage between a police officer and his wife. It is dealt with so well by John Nicholl and he makes it a lot easier to read this, as it is a short and intensive read.
The narrator is spectacular, giving distinct voices to both Kathy and Michael.
