About this listen

*Features an exclusive unheard track, the last written together by the Van Halen brothers*

In this intimate and open account – nothing like any rock-and-roll memoir you’ve ever read – Alex Van Halen shares his personal story of family, friendship, music and brotherly love in a remarkable tribute to his beloved brother and band mate.

‘A remarkable memoir’ Classic Rock

‘A highly emotional read’ Guardian

In his rough yet sweet voice, Alex recounts the brothers’ childhood, first in the Netherlands and then in working class Pasadena, California, with an itinerant musician father and a very proper Indonesian-born mother – the kind of mum who admonished her boys to “always wear a suit” no matter how famous they became – a woman who was both proud and practical, nonchalant about taking a doggie bag from a star-studded dinner. He also shares tales of musical politics, infighting, and plenty of bad-boy behaviour. But mostly his is a story of brotherhood, music, and enduring love.

"I was with him from day one,” Alex writes. “We shared the experience of coming to America and figuring out how to fit in. We shared a record player, an 800 square foot house, a mom and dad, and a work ethic. Later, we shared the back of a tour bus, alcoholism, the experience of becoming famous, of becoming fathers and uncles, and of spending more hours in the studio than I’ve spent doing anything else in this life. We shared a depth of understanding that most people can only hope to achieve in a lifetime."

There has never been an accurate account of them or the band, and Alex wants to set the record straight on Edward’s life and death.

having been a fan of van Halen since I was 12 and especially Alex ( I'm a drummer), I found Alex's philosophical musings fascinating and accurate, this really made this book special to me. the influence that Al and Eddie's dad ,Jan, had on them and his pearls of wisdom go a long way to explain the determination that the boys had to be musicians way above the bar of their peers. it also explains the swing and jazz behind much of the van Halen material. something missing from all the hair metal bands that followed in their wake. one thing I found strange, very little mention of Michael Anthony although his harmony's were mentioned as an essential part of the bands sound. anyway, a great read/listen. I'm now going to listen to some old VH and remind my self of how great they were

essential reading for any musician.

Loved Alex reading. Yes, I do love VH, yes I know much about their music and history, but this book is personal. The story is about people, family, emotions, growing up, resilience, beginnings, some endings, but also continuing. This is partly a brother’s personal tribute to family and his real soul brother, and his memoir. I loved every minute of it.

My affinity for Alex has definitely risen . He tells his story very honestly , doesn’t try to make his brother a god but has such admiration for him

Honest and heartfelt

Really interesting account of the band that started off as the soundtrack to my teenage years. Saw them at that famous gig in Aberdeen supporting Sabbath and they were awesome 😃

Terrific listen
