He is Dexter Mayhew, tall, dark, and (she can't deny it) handsome. She is Emma Morley, bottled red hair, wilfully badly dressed, all principles and no action. Story
The brilliant new novel from the author of the New York Times best seller Everything I Never Told You. Everyone in Shaker Heights was talking about it that summer: how Isabelle, the last of the Richardson children, had finally gone around the bend and burned the house down. In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned - from the layout of the winding roads to the colours of the houses to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead.

Story
A powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an 1100-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe and built her back up again. At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. After her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than an idea: vague, outlandish, and full of promise.

Story
Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland. The similarities end there; they are from very different worlds. When they both earn places at Trinity College in Dublin, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years. This is an exquisite love story about how a person can change another person's life - a simple yet profound realisation that unfolds beautifully over the course of the novel. It tells us how difficult it is to talk about how we feel and it tells us - blazingly - about cycles of domination, legitimacy and privilege.

In this, perhaps Dickens' most profound and personal novel, we are invited to share in the sentimental education of Pip, the poor boy from the village forge who risks losing himself in snobbery and selfishness when he mysteriously inherits a fortune. The story moves from the bleak Kentish marshes of Pip's childhood to a thrilling climax that mingles tragedy and triumph.

Critic reviews
"I cannot recommend a book more joyfully....Hilariously funny, miraculously observed, endlessly touching." ( Daily Telegraph)
"A brilliant evocation of life as a single girl in a certain time...reads like Anita Loos out of Jane Austen, and any woman who has ever had a job, a relationship, or indeed a mother will read it and roar." ( The Times)

Fantastic. Shame it's abridged...
July 15th. Just finished listening to Bridget Jones' Diary. As a result, I will:
1, Declare Tracie Bennett to be new goddess of narration and will erect shrine in dedication to awesome talents in bedroom.
I Will Not:
1. Listen to audio books narrated by perverts, morons, or the overly verbose.
2. Eat more than 2000 calories per day.
3. Keep this bloody shrine in bedroom. It's a monstrosity and the dogs keep peeing on glossy picture of Tracie. Thank god it's laminated!
4. Looking at empty box of Maltesers on floor... I'll work on #2 tomorrow.
My only criticisms is that the whole book is on just one file, which means if you want to listen to it in bed and you're going to sleep, the book'll play the entire file. It would be lovely to have the file divided up into a number of easily manageable parts...

I will always love this!
I read Bridget Jones's Diary quite a while back and decided to give it a re-read last week, but this time I wanted to give it a listen so I could enjoy my long walks and work commute. I have to say it was a great decision.
Tracie Bennett was a charming and funny narrator for the story and she gave Bridget life in my brain. She seemed very into the story and the role while reading, which made the experience of listening to her very entertaining. Will definitely see if she's the narrator to The Edge of Reason to give it a listen.
