Story
Calorie information is ubiquitous. We see authoritative numbers that tell us the calorie count of what we're about to consume everywhere. Here's the thing, however, that most people have no idea about. All of the calorie counts that you see everywhere today, are wrong. Dr Giles Yeo, obesity researcher at Cambridge University, challenges the conventional model and demonstrates that all calories are not created equal. He addresses why popular diets succeed, at least in the short term, and why they ultimately fail, and what your environment has to do with your bodyweight.

Why, despite all the advice about what to eat, are we all still getting fatter? The answers are much more surprising - and fascinating - than we've been led to believe. The key to health and weight loss lies not in the latest fad diet, nor even in the simple mantra of 'eat less, exercise more', but in the microbes already inside us.

Story
For decades, the medical community has looked to a variety of reasons for why we age, and the consensus is that no-one dies of old age; they die of age-related diseases. That's because ageing is not a disease - it is inevitable. But what if everything you think you know about ageing is wrong? What if ageing is a disease? And that disease is curable. In Lifespan, Dr David Sinclair, one of the world’s foremost authorities on genetics and ageing, argues just that.

Good science bundled with annoying social justice
- By MastaRob on 18-12-19
Summary
A combination of Professor Felice Jacka's love of food and her own experience of depression and anxiety as a young woman led her to question whether what we put in our mouths every day affects more than our waistline.
Felice set out on a journey of discovery to change the status quo and uncover the truth through rigorous science. Beginning her PhD in 2005, she examined the association between women's diets and their mental health, focusing on depression and anxiety.
She soon discovered - you feel how you eat. It is Professor Jacka's groundbreaking research that has now changed the way we think about mental and brain health in relation to diet.
Brain Changer explains how and why we should consider our food as the basis of our mental and brain health throughout our lives. It includes a selection of recipes and meal plans featuring ingredients beneficial to mental health.
It also includes the simple, practical solutions we can use to help prevent mental health problems in the first place and offers strategies for treating these problems if they do arise.
This is not a diet book to help you on the weight scales. This is a guide to good habits to save your brain and to optimise your mental health through what you eat at every stage of life.
Critic reviews
"This is a fascinating book by a leading researcher, covering one of the most exciting areas of modern nutritional research about how our diet can impact our gut and brain health. The combination of personal stories and cutting-edge science is a real winner." (Dr Michael Mosley, author and TV presenter)
