Summary

An unforgettable memoir by a trailblazing Black woman in post-war London.

Denied teaching jobs due to the colour bar. Working in an office amidst the East End’s bombsites. Serving as a lady’s maid to an Empire-loving aristocrat. Raising two children in suburbia. Becoming one of the first Black headteachers in Britain. Beryl Gilroy's memoir of her extraordinary life is a lost classic.

Critic reviews

"Fresh and vital.... Full of wit, perceptiveness, humour and compassion.... A hugely important memoir from the rare perspective of a Black woman transported to the colonial motherland." (Bernardine Evaristo)

"A must-read. Her life makes you laugh. Her life makes you cry. Get to know her." (Benjamin Zephaniah)

"A superb but shocking memoir.... Imaginative, resilient and inspiring." (Jacqueline Wilson)

An amazing insight.

Everyone who works in Education should hear this book, it should be a staple on Teacher training courses. Unfortunately so many things I can identify with whilst working in the education system in the last 17 years but it really felt like my story was being told too. It’s sad things have moved on so little but so happy that this book is being told.

A great piece of history

This was a lovely book, I enjoyed hearing the different voices and accents of the children and characters. Beryl Gilroy was an inspiration ahead of her time. A part of history, I’m pleased to now be aware of.

An essential read for teachers and parents

A great look back at history of our country thro g g the lense of first hand experience. The dedication, resilience and touch of humour exhibited in the book, sets a great example of how we can triumph over our personal battles, again and again. Excellent read.

What a harmony ♥️

Inspiring, educational, eyes, mind opening and heartbreak.
I have learnt so much what meant by being a black person in UK.
Love it
