Summary

Alex Hunter, code named Arcadian, wakes up with no knowledge of who he is, in the care of a woman he doesn't recognise, in a country not his own. But there is a calling deep within him, to return home to Black Mountain. Formed a billion years ago, the Appalachian's Black Mountain hosts a terrible legend. Only one elder remains to guard its long-forgotten, deadly secret and there is a fear that there is evil lurking again. Some hikers have gone missing, and the rescue team sent to search for them has not returned. Meanwhile, in nearby Ashville, Professor Matt Kearns is drawn into the mystery of an ancient artefact recovered from the mountainside, and an image too grotesque to be real. A survivor is then found half-alive, covered in blood - blood revealed to be not quite human. Alex must confront an age-old enemy of man and discover the truth about his past, and confront the horror that stalks the frozen mountain, and also the one haunting his very soul.©2012 Greig Beck (P)2012 Bolinda Publishing Action & Adventure Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Suspense Thriller & Suspense Scary

I am really enjoying the Greig Beck books for their sheer entertainment value as I do mindless gardening tasks. The plot twists keep me entertained enough to have now purchased the 5th book in the series. I like that they are based on legends and have a connection to myths and native stories. I do need to listen to these books at 1.2 speed as the readers voice is too slow for me and annoyed me. By upping the speed a bit the action scenes were more believable.

Very enjoyable reads

I saw this book recommended under a bigfoot horror book list, but as it turns out the bigfoot was only 1/4s of the book. Most of the story was focused on this over-the-top Super-soldier conspiracy B-movie story, with the bigfoot in there just to give the super-soldier a monster to fight. Not the book I was thought I was buying.

The bigfoot side story was... OK. The scenes of it stalking people were creepy, but ultimately its let down because you realise early on the book is setting up for only one possible ending - it's version of Captain America vs the monster, and it will be a fist-fight. So there's no real drama, the bigfoot story is just treading water for Captain USA to get there.

As for the super-soldier story, it's so stupid. We're told about 20,000 soldiers die undertaking the treatment for every success, and even those successes (with exception of Captain America) die within a month.... that's insane. That's 4% of USA's active miltary personnel - 4 times the numbers of its soldiers lost in Iraq, or almost half of what they lost in Vietnam. My god, even in USA I think someone would be asking questions if the military was losing a town's worth of soldiers during peace time. And to top it all off they train these 1 month to live "super-soldiers" by having them kill special forces. I'm sorry but how long does it take to train US Special forces - and this book thinks its worth the time, cost and effort to have a squad of them then get killed to field test a "super soldier" who has 1 month to live? The whole over the top B-movie stupidity of this plot hurt my brain. You know what's better than 1 "super soldier" who will die in a month? 20,000 regular soldiers and special forces units who had be deployed multiple times, across multiples battlefields over their careers! Super soldiers arn't super if you need to kill of your own army to recruit a unit them - especially when they have lives shorter than a mayfly!

This book is dumb

Captain America vs bigfoot..stupid as it sounds
