About this listen

I think it’s important that you know this about me, that you understand this: I’m not sorry.

I’d do it again.

After my husband died eight years ago, I made vengeance my only purpose, my religion, my destiny. But to get to my enemy, I had to make myself like him. He had a kingdom of secrets? Then I would make an empire. He had blood on his hands? Then I would bathe in it.

But Tristan and Isolde changed everything. I hadn’t counted on wanting them, needing them; I hadn’t counted on how it felt to watch the two of them fall in love. I’d thought I had everything under control—I’d thought I was safe from my own long-dead heart. I’d never imagined that the wronged husband, the jealous king from my childhood fairy tales, would be played by none other than me.

It no longer matters what I used to believe. My enemy is ready to finish the game, and for the first time in eight years, I have pieces on the board I can’t afford to lose. I’ll burn the entire world to keep Tristan and Isolde safe, I’ll scorch the earth—but as any good assassin will tell you, fire will only get a man so far, because there’s always something left in the ashes. And for the three of us, it’s the cold, bitter bones of the truth: their story begins and ends with me.

And every story needs a villain....

Simone is one of the - very few - authors who's books I will always purchase, and know I will enjoy.

The way she can drop the reader into any scenario with so few carefully chosen descriptives is masterful, without rambling or becoming repetitive. It's obvious she researches meticulously, and that research pays off with her world building, character development, back stories, and the tapestry she weaves to make it all make sense together.

None of these characters are ever 100% nice or 'evil'; they have motive, direction, choices, scars, and redeeming qualities, and even when they're not acting in a 'likable' way, I can still see why they're behaving in that way - or it becomes clear later why they did the thing.

Jacob Morgan did an amazing job. 10/10 for bringing Mark to life and helping me find empathy for the character. It feels like he puts a lot of forethought into his work and learns the story, bringing it out in a unique way while feels captivating.

Isabelle Ruther was a bit too heavy worded for me, she didn't bring out the nuance of Isolde. and Oscar Reyes sounded out of breath the whole time. Neither did well while voicing other characters in their chapters either, and at times I really struggled to listen to them.

All in all, great series end.

Just to start off: I’m a forever fan of Sierra Simone and I’ll read every single one of her books until the end of her writing career. And then I’ll be forever rereading her books too.

But Bitter Burn wasn’t a hit for me. After reflection I can put it down to two reasons: 1. Pacing for the 2/3 of the book just didn’t hit the usual perfection of this author; 2. Mark felt out of character for the majority of the book. I’ll bite the bullet and say… that I don’t we needed his POV.

Before I have all bullets flying at me - maybe I am just more used to much darker MCs staying on the darker side, or maybe I am generally more used to the darker themes and most readers will find this a perfect balance, but for me, Mark was perfect in the first 3 books. He was perfect without the admissions of love, the grovelling, the tears, the dog. There was so much of him that was obvious, he was all these things in the previous books, I just don’t think I needed it spelled out.

Narrators? I’m so so sad to say this but Oscar wasn’t up to his usual hypnotic self, but it could be because Jacob was just pure perfection. The one thing that made the book for me. Isabelle..? Her tones would be perfect for other books, but serious improvements need to be made for performing male voices.

All in all, still gorgeous Sierra Simone writing, absolutely saved by chapters 35 onwards and by Jacob Morgan’s perfect narration. We appreciate the ending to the series, and we will always fan girl, but when you receive perfection every time, I guess i just expect more from this one. Don’t hate me.

Probably the most perfect series I have ever listened to. The story, the narration and now Jacob Morgan as Mark Trevena... absolute reading and listening perfection.
