About this listen
What makes us happy? Bill Bailey plays crazy golf and hugs trees to find out.
Is there a knack to being happy? From paddle-boarding down the Thames in a Santa hat, to wild swimming in a glacial river and cooking sausages on a campfire, Bill revels in the exhilaration of the outdoors, as well as the quieter pleasures of letter-writing, or of simple reflection.
In this beautiful and uplifting audiobook, Bill Bailey explores all this and more while delving into the nature of happiness, all in his own, remarkable, way.
Packed with wisdom and humour, Bill Bailey aims for the heart of pure joy and contentment—and how we can all achieve it.

Not a self help book but Bill’s thoughts on happiness, with some mention of studies on happiness etc. Nothing particular new here, maybe there IS nothing new to say about how to be happy: aim to love and be loved, be altruistic, get out into nature, be physically active, travel, notice the small moments of joy. These are the main themes. A couple resonated with me. The joy he felt on nurturing one strawberry plant for example. Those small things really are where happiness lies.
I assume after many years of touring Bill has more money to spend on travel etc than the average reader, so some of the descriptions of his many travels left me thinking that I could understand why these may have made him happy but few could emulate this. That aside, I enjoyed the few witty/funny moments and it felt a bit like spending an evening with a friend reminiscing about things and discussing life, the universe and everything
When I first started listening I felt that maybe it wasn’t a great idea for him to narrate the book himself as it sounded like anyone (professional narrators aside) trying to read a book aloud. However after a while either he got into his stride or my ears adjusted but by the end I felt it could only have been narrated by Bill himself.
I have enjoyed Bill’s work for many years - a very talented musician and funny man
Not remarkable but enjoyable
