Summary
One terrible case always haunted detective Matt Ballard. Now many years later, the killer seems to be back. And this time he's after Matt.
When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught.
Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.
Then another murder happens, with some of the hallmarks of the old case. Has the killer returned, or is this just a sick copycat determined to ruin Matt's life and reputation?

Terrible negation, slightly predictable story
Since when did Lincolnshire people sound like Devon, a Welsh character also south west .... and the character from Sunderland, an awful mix is Ulster, Scottish and who knows what else! The publishers have done this author no favours here. Story OK, but slightly predictable, not as good as Their Lost Daughters, but would be vastly improved by a re recording by Richard Armitage.

Good story, naff narration
The narration was not the best. I didn't like his female voices and everything was said in an overblown way. A bit like the "in a world..." film trailer voice overs. I like joy ellis stories but prefer the narrator of the Jackman/Ellis books.

Good story, shame about the narration
Good story, plenty of twists and turns, but sadly let down by the awful narration, really wooden and had me almost giving up on several occasions

A truly awful narration
I love Joy Ellis's books but honestly the narration on this one is just so bad and if I could have rated it 0 stars I would have! I totally agree with another reviewer when they said he read it like it was a childrens book and he makes the females sound like children. I certainly won't listen to any more books by this narrator.

Disappointing
I have recently discovered Joy Ellis but found this very disappointing. The narrator mispronounced some easy words and his attempts at female voices made them sound stupid and particularly wet. The story was ok but the bad narration drew attention to annoying writing in places.

narration let's it down
I love Joy Ellis books but a running theme seems to be poor narration. This was the worst so far . Ive read all the Jackman books and all the Nikki books so it's really off putting when characters from these stories pop up in here with completely different voices, styles and personalities...Rory for one is just awful in this. some of this was read in such a robotic way that I had to mess about with the speed settings to try to sort it out (didn't work) also some words completely mispronounced as if a computer were saying them. Quite enjoyed the story but don't think I'll go any further with this series as it was so off putting .

terrible narrator
this was painful to listen to. sounded automated, the attempted "female" voices the absolute worst. After listen to the Jackman series of her books which were narrated brilliantly, I was so disappointed and wish I could listen to someone else record this book

Narrator better suited for children's books?
I've enjoyed many of Joy Ellis' books, but didn't finish this one as the narration just didn't do it for me. Antony Ferguson I'm sure, did a far better job than I ever could, but I feel that his narration would be better suited for a storyline aimed at a much younger audience. The rest of the series has been done with another narrator, so I'm going to give book two a try.

A great story
A great story line but terrible narration. He makes the women sound like children talking.
