About this listen

She marries him for revenge. He marries her for her serpent mark.

On the eve of her twentieth birthday, Sol is kidnapped by a barbarian. He wants her to use the magic she doesn't have to heal someone. She wants to avenge her mother by killing his chieftain.

Desperate to get close to their leader, she marries one of their warriors. Her husband vows to never bed her. She vows to win his favor.

When she's plunged into his city, she realizes the depth of his people's prejudices. They will never accept her if she doesn't become like them. Even then, it may not be enough to obtain the vengeance she craves.

Betrayer is an enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance with plenty of tension and steam. It's the first in a series, ending with a cliffhanger. Intended for mature listeners.

So, the mfc has a plan of revenge and ends up marrying one of the enemy believing it is necessary for completing her revenge.
When he refuses to bed her because he knows she married him for nefarious reasons, she gets all upset about being spurned.
It's ridiculous. I'M only half way through and while I'm invested in the story, the actions/thinking of the mfc may stop me from buying the other books in the series.

I'll update my review if my opinion changes.

Ridiculous attitude of mfc

It’s a good idea and the author has a good style. However there’s plot holes and repetition. It feels like the editor has cut bits of the story perhaps because it was repetitive but has made it skip.
Sometimes they are suddenly in a different place or you not quite sure who’s present. There’s a struggle to move her friendship to Everly and to much has been placed in Cassandra.
It isn’t steamy at all. It’s more young adult than adult. It’s quite prudish to be honest; he forgoes intimacy with his wife because he doesn’t trust her. Not exactly “mature”.

Spoilers but kept minimal
The twist at the end is fairly obvious as he has too much say/power in the story to be any body else. I thought Debra was the uncles wife? It feels unlikely you’d be so easily able to condemn a noble women after the dynamic set up so easily.
Sol can be incredibly young. It’s clear she’s 20 but sometimes she comes across as a 20 year old with her background and other times a sheltered little girl which doesn’t fit.
Gabriel gives her no grace at all. When her reasoning finally shows up he has zero compassion despite a similar background and the good she’s done

Overall this author has amazing potential but it’s just not polished. I’m undecided if I will listen or read the next book. The story Id like to finish but the writing is not quite there.

Interesting but issues

I really don’t get what was this supposed to be about. This book was so confusing- fms is set to avenge her mother’s death, but she’s got an emotional intelligence of a room temperature and her stance on the matter is shaky at the least, she makes up her moves as she goes basically, whereas her “love interest” (bc there was supposed to be enemies-to-lovers trope) is not very keen on playing that part, like at all, there is tiny bit of sexual tension but he’s too emotionally constipated to act on it and opts for self-imposed celibacy. At every turn her lack of knowing what she’s doing keeps worsening her situation and her lack of realisation of the fact was getting on my nerves. I liked that she sometimes showed a bit of spark rather than crumbling down and crying, but her quest was not a sign of bravery but a very dangerous stupidity. The whole story I was just waiting for the cup to overflow bc how many weak decisions does it take for a person to see that they were too dump to form a real plan and so they f-ed up. This was a very bad opening of a trilogy and it did not inspire me to continue listening. The narrator’s performance was stiff and cringeworthy at times, not a good job at differentiating between the characters and not a very good acting. I’d say it could have been good. But just wasn’t.

Very engaging story that kept me on my toes. The narrator was very good and really brought the story to life.

Amazing story and great narration
