In the early 2000s, Dave Gunn and his brother Colin built the Bestwood Cartel, a multi-million-pound empire based on drugs, extortion and violent crime during a time when Nottingham was labelled Britain's gun crime capital.

The second season of Sherwood, the BBC crime drama series, was inspired by the activities of the Gunn Brothers and the deadly crime wave in Nottingham, which earned the city the nickname 'Shottingham.'

According to the media, the Gunn Brothers ruled some of the city’s suburbs with an iron fist, drove around in flash cars and were dripping in expensive jewellery. They saw themselves as protectors of their manor – a modern-day mix of Robin Hood and the Kray twins.

As the violence escalated, including brutal punishment shootings between rival gun gangs, the police launched Project Starburst to dismantle the Bestwood Cartel and its rivals.

Much has been written about the Gunn Brothers in the media and books such as Hoods, but no gang leader has ever detailed the real-life warfare in Nottingham in the early 2000s. In Bestwood Boss, Dave Gunn sets the record straight with the first ever insider’s account of what led to the blood-soaked ganglands.

This was a gangster story that you've probably heard before with a few twists. There's some interesting insights into the guy; he obviously realises that he has mental health issues given that he a) admits it freely and b) is in therapy for it, which is refreshing to hear despite the guys fascination for wanting to bite people's lips off. The narrator - Brandon Mullins - does an amazing job of pulling you into the world and immersing you in the crazy stories, of which there are many. He gives the story menace and gusto when needed and a more thoughtful, pensive tone for the quiet moments. Recommend.

You can say many conflicting things about Dave Gunn, but one thing is certain - he had quite a remarkable life. The book is violent, gore, and full of shocking details. There were moments when I was thinking to myself 'No way this happened, it's too much, too crazy' but the thing is, Mr Gunn, doesn't come across as a liar, on the contrary, he takes almost a perverse joy in admitting to everything - be it bad, insane, illegal or good, kind and human.

I am of a feint heart so listening to some of the gruesome descriptions was rather challenging.

Let's talk about the narration!
Love, love, love the narrator. Brandon Mullins excels in giving voice and life to these pages; turning something that could be read as a boasting of a madman into a literary joyride. It takes skill and talent to bring tenderness and humanity to people like Dave Gunn, but he does it and he does it well. Thanks to his voice-acting one minute we feel for Gunn, and sympathize with him, only to be completely repulsed by his violent outbursts a chapter later. It's not an easy book to narrate, it's dark and brutal but also so genuinely insane that it's funny. Brandon Mullins does a terrific job, and I am really looking forward to hearing more of his work,

Great story if you enjoy being reminded every 30 seconds how "hard" this guy supposedly was. Also if bragging about constantly beating women is your thing you'll enjoy it. Narrator voice is also so annoying.
