Long before Dorothy visits Oz, her aunt, Emily Gale, sets off on her own unforgettable adventure much closer to home…

When news reaches Kansas that her beloved sister has tragically died, Emily Gale must become a mother overnight. Her sister’s orphaned child, Dorothy, desperately needs a home.

But Emily doubts her ability to fill her sister’s shoes; her life on the barren Kansas prairies is no place for a child.

On the unforgiving plains, Emily's courage is endlessly tested. The prolonged drought and relentless dust storms threaten to destroy everything – including her home and her marriage.

Can Emily overcome her grief and let Dorothy heal her heart?

From the promise of Chicago in the 1920s to the harsh beauty of the Kansas prairie during the dust bowl of the 1930s, this is a story of family, duty and one woman’s journey of self-discovery.

As a huge Wizard of Oz fan I knew I’d love this book.. and I wasn’t disappointed. It creates a background story to one of the greatest modern fairytales of all time. The author drops many references to Dorothy’s adventures in Oz and it all comes together beautifully

Wonderful!

Over all its fine, and if this had not been tied to the "Wizard of Oz" world I might have enjoyed it better. I just disliked that the author took all the magic out of Oz and locked us firmly in reality. I also found that as it was set before the time period of the original story, I just did not feel the same peril or worry that the narrator did as I know whatever happens in this story these characters DO make it though and have a home and are happy (if financially struggling) by the time Dorothy goes to Oz. It just constantly took me out of the story. It is well written and the author is talented I just think I am not the right reader for this book.

Missing the "what's going to happen next" feeling.

I was quite disappointed listening to this. I have loved Hazel Gaynor’s previous titles but I just found this to be predictable and boring. I was kind of wishing it was finished half way through. Because The Wizard of Oz is such a well known story there wasn’t enough content to engage me. It was well read though.

Just lacking in a
