Summary

Richard, Lord Ramsay, has been brought up from the cradle with a consciousness of his duty to his family and his name. His sense of responsibility has led him to install two elderly aunts in the Dower House; educate his cousin Peter Ramsay and employ him as a steward; and provide a home for poor relation Jane Hawthorne, who once served as his mother's companion. When a letter arrives from America informing him that the death of a relative has left 18-year-old Susannah Ramsay not only an orphan, but heiress to a Kentucky plantation as well, making an offer of marriage to his American cousin seems to be a practical solution: Besides providing for the young woman, such a match would give the Ramsays extensive holdings on two continents.

Then Susannah arrives from America, and Richard suddenly finds his well-ordered life set end over end. With her wild red hair, unfashionable clothes, and frontier ways, Susannah appears to be an unlikely Lady Ramsay. Appalled at the prospect of marriage to the girl, yet determined to fulfill his obligation, Richard turns her over to Jane and Peter for education in the ways of British society. But her transformation into a lady is the least of the surprises Susannah has in store for the strait-laced Ramsay clan....

Easy, escapist listening

Baroness Buckskin was the perfect antidote to a miserable and stressful few weeks for me. The predictable nature of the genre and the easy, lighthearted story made this a very enjoyable and entertaining distraction. It was a delight watching Richard wake up to his real feelings for Jane and for the pair to finally find their way to one another. The fact that he is engaged to Susannah, an eighteen-year-old fresh off the boat from America is a complication. Susannah is a very lovable character and it is obvious right from the outset that she is much more suited to Peter than the stiff and formal Lord Ramsay. Discovering how the four of them were all going to get their happy ever after without a scandal or much of a to-do made this a delightful listen. As usual, the narration by Joel Froomkin is great. I always enjoy listening to his productions.
A fellow reviewer is mistaken in saying that there is no end or final chapter. The audiobook is complete and in its entirety with a clear ending and happy ever after for these characters.

Funny historical romance

I prefer the author's other books because she combines mystery and romance. That's not to say it's bad, but I like my romance mixed with something else.
There is no ending, according to one of the reviews. There is a ending, but I understand what they are saying. We usually get a glimpse into the future after the characters profess their love for each other. Whether that be a single day, a few weeks/months, or a few years. This does not occur in this book. They discover they love each other here, and the misunderstanding is resolved. The story is finished. However, if you're used to getting a glimpse of the future, this is a little dissatisfying.
