The day after Christmas, Dr. Watson visits 221B Baker Street and finds Sherlock Holmes examining a shabby discarded hat. A commissionaire named Peterson stumbled upon the hat alongside a Christmas goose after witnessing a scuffle on Tottenham Court Road. Faced with the trembling thief, Holmes makes a surprising choice. Rather than handing him over to police, he lets Ryder go free, hoping terror will redeem him and clear the falsely accused Horner.
