December 1998. A gravel pull-off on Grassy Lick Road, just outside a town called Nunnelly, Tennessee. Luna's friend Emily calls her from a gas station payphone, her voice hollow and wrong, saying she found something in her grandmother's well. When Luna gets there, the well has no water. The bucket comes up wet, but the water evaporates before it hits the air, leaving a fine white dust that smells of burnt sugar and old bone. Emily won't tell her what she saw at the bottom. She just keeps saying 'it was looking up at me.' Luna tries to find answers in the county courthouse, in a faded WPA survey from 1937 that marks the well as 'sealed, no depth recorded.' The story ends with Luna standing at the well in the dark, the bucket rope creaking, and the sound of something breathing below. No resolution.
