Narrated by:
Determined to shake up Hollywood stereotypes, Sidney Poitier used his status as a Black man starring in lead roles in the Golden Age of Hollywood to push for more diverse on-screen roles. Today, he is recognized for paving the way for Black actors in film and is considered the first Black actor to become a movie star.
Before becoming an award-winning actor, director, activist, and diplomat, Sidney Poitier spent his early years in what is now called the Bahamas. He moved to the United States when he was fifteen, and eventually he found a home in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. With a determination to become an American star, Sidney learned to read and focused on his acting skills. Slowly but surely, his hard work paid off, and he became the first Black man to win an Academy Award for his leading performance in Lilies of the Field, which was released in 1963. Learn all about the inspiring early life and incredibly influential career of the Hollywood star Sidney Poitier in this biography for young readers!
