Hank and his boys have met a seasoned hunter in the Elkhorn Grill. The stranger informs them that taking bear spray on their father-sons adventure "isn't a bad idea." He then describes a disturbing grizzly encounter he had in Alaska while longbow hunting. After hearing the harrowing story the boys lose enthusiasm for hiking, but Hank is undeterred. One of Hank's boys discovers a watch along the trail later that morning and is startled by what remains attached to it.
This discovery leads to the identification of two bodies, missing persons from the Columbia Falls area. Dr. Morris finds compelling forensic evidence that the deceased were mauled by a grizzly. When two more Columbia Falls residents go missing, business picks up for Jesse Moses, the Flathead County Search and Rescue Coordinator. The County Sheriff, Ross Jacks, assembles a task force including Jesse, Dr. Morris, the regional bear manager, and a veterinary Behaviorist, Dr. Anna Krumm. The task force members are forced to consider the possibility of a rogue predatory grizzly. The investigation turns up unexpected and contradictory evidence while the buried secrets of a remote Columbia Falls community are unearthed.
