A personal account of a night in late October 2019, when a wrong turn off a county highway in southern Illinois led to an encounter with a woman running a coin laundry in a town that had no reason to have one open at 2 a.m. The fluorescent hum, the smell of bleach and cigarettes, the way her eyes never left the security monitors even when she talked to me. She said she'd been there for twelve years, seven nights a week, always the same shift. She asked me to stay until sunrise. I didn't ask why.
