Summary

In which the physician J. R. Bickley records the sudden passing of his friend Humphrey Arbuthnot after their perilous wanderings, together with the strange fragment of writing left upon the dead man’s desk that hints at a vision glimpsed in his final moments. And thus the chronicle of their adventures is set forth to the world according to Arbuthnot’s last command, while Bickley, Bastin, and memory itself look back toward the lost island of Orofena and the mysteries that now seem buried beyond the reach of mortal travellers.
